This guy is a thief. He attempted to steal my bike (see cut lock in photo) last week in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

A stranger (whom I will be taking out for many drinks) witnessed and confronted the low life, grabbing the bike from him and thwarting the robbery. He also took this photo with his phone.

That stranger must be a fellow cyclist, because from what I've seen, most people do nothing if they see a bike theft in progress. I've always said that if I see anyone trying to break open or cut through a bike lock, that I would walk right up to them and take their picture. If it's someone trying to recover their own bike, then they probably won't object to someone taking their picture. There really isn't much else we can do, especially if we don't know whose bike it is. You were lucky that this guy was there to grab the bike from him and take his picture. He must have seen you riding the bike around the neighborhood before.

Great! But what he do after he thwarted the thief? Stand there with your bike until you showed up? How did he know it was really your bike when you showed up?

This is what I did in a similar situation: http://thephoenix.com/Boston/News/48190-Silver-spokes-of-justice/
Not sure it was the smartest thing to chase after the guy (and eventually get into a wrestling match) but it didn't seem right to let him go. He copped a plea for numerous other crimes and was sentenced to like 18 months...

He brought the bike into the building it was in front of (which i work in) and left it with the front desk. I came down an hour later, mystified why my bike was in the foyer with a broken lock. The front desk was like, oh that's yoourr bike.

A bystander agreed to watch it. I returned with the cop before IDing the perp and picked up the bike.
