I might need to rethink my routes that go through Decatur... sucks because it's my hometown, and where my folks still live. How horrible is this? 61 year old man, beaten to death by via gang related activity, cycling home from work. I heard this was around 6 pm, in daylight. I hope they are tried as adults. :(

I think one day these things will have to be done by people like you or me, are you up for it? Up for killing teenagers and others that commit these foul crimes? If things keep going in the direction they appear to be going this may be something that we as survivors may have to do to keep ourselves and our families safe, 'cause we all know the current system is failing us more and more everyday, thats why these things are happening more and more on a daily basis, it might not happen in our life time but are you preparing your children for it? Will they prepare their children for it? Scary **** huh? Not as scarry as what these little ****s did to that poor old dude, just trying to get home from a hard days work, how ****ed up is that? If it were me I'd just kill the little ****s! Then I'd go after their parents for not teaching them the differance between right and wrong. Yeah, I'm mad. No, not angry, I'm ****ing mad!

That's horrible.

Another reason to ride fast in some parts of town.

There are no easy answers.Personally I enjoy living in a very rural area. It's a big deal when someone is murdered.Doesn't change what's happening elsewhere but I avoid being involved. It will get worse as our society continues to degrade.

EDIT:
Uhm.....at the risk of flames. We're all armed..........well mostly. It's enough of a risk to find out no one f%$@s with you.The risk of finding out if you're in the minority of the unarmed weighs heavy.People wave at you and are generally nice.I'm social with my neighbors and know their names.I've been here less than a year.Way better than hearing sirens and noise every night.Sad that you have to run to find peace.

Most of the time I'm the minority and don't worry about it.I'm beginning to believe an armed society is a polite society.

That's awful!

We've been having more and more problems with gangs here - ha - remember the old mayor about 4 years ago making a statement that there were no gangs here - when the year before there was a documentary on PBS late night that just happened to turn on - and it was a focus on gangs - and spotting their call signs, etc - and it then I noticed RPD - it was all based on Rochester NY.

And the age group is like 13-18 yrs old (and older). We'll sometimes have 3-4 fights in front of my building - they don't care - the fights spill out into the street - and many are girls fights. And knifings too - couple in my building (I work at the center of downtown btw).

It's gotten so bad over the years - the police set up their big trailer (that they use to go sweep a street - they take the big trailer - and set up at the end of the street, establish phone lines, etc and the city sends reps from different depts and they go house to house - finding people with warrants, etc - look looking for people, and the city checks meters to see who's hooked up illegally etc - same with cable, etc.) on the side of my building - it's been there for a month now - and they still have fights - they just don't care. But at least we're not getting robbed or stabbed inside the building, 1st floor like we had in the beginning part of the year. Several rival gangs are here - you can tell too with their colors - they stand across the street from each other. I specifically do not go out the front doors of my building any more - preferring to exit with bike from the back of the building where there is security for the parking garage.

sucks

And we are not allowed to legally carry handguns in Illinois.

Nauseating story. Check off this area as a place where I will never live, visit, or spend dollar one. Rochester, NY too from the sounds of it.
