Is this a decent candidate to convert into a single-speed freewheel? And if so, is this a type of conversion that as a novice, I could do on my own? Any help from the awesome contributors on this forum, would be appreciated. Thank you!

just want to tell you that the dropouts on this bike are near vertical which would not make it a good candidate

get it and then get an eno rear hub if you really want to make it fixed.

It'll make a good bike no matter what

I converted a 88 sr300 not too long ago. Wasn't a huge deal, but the vertical dropouts are going to be an issue. I lucked out and my chain tension is passable (not jumping off the cog) you are going to have to dish the rear wheel or use spacers to get you chainline correct. I wouldn't say the perfect candidate for a conversion, but it is doable by a novice. I like how mine turned out. light and stiff.

Great bike though. I have the same bike. Great for crits or short sprints here and there

I would ride as-is since you either need a lot of luck or an ENO hub to convert a bike with vertical dropouts.
