The Arlington Heights part of this is 2 - 4 blocks from where I live. http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/09/manhunt-in-northwest-suburbs-for-armed-escapee.html The excitement was done by the time I got home last night, but that's kind of close for comfort! the Meijer store is on my way to the forest preserve I like to ride in, and I've been pedaling by there for years.

Without reading the story...

The danger here was in being in a certain place at a certain time. You said that, driving, you arrived at the certain place after the danger had passed. Would riding a bicycle have put you at the certain place at the worst time, or would it have been even later?

Looks like you would have been safer riding the bike, the hijacker would have probably passed you up for a car had you been there at that time. If you had been there at that time in the car...

They weren't sure the danger had passed when I got home, and there were considerably fewer people out when I got home. The swat team and the police helicopters had left by then, but they were still looking for a armed convict who'd managed to escape from the inside of a police car while shackled at the hands and feet that had lived in the area earlier. Reducing the amount of time I spent traveling through that area while being locked in my car seemed much safer to me than taking my time bicycling while I pondered the existential possibilities of the situation. But we never really know, do we?

Being out of the area while at work and then staying late to do some volunteer work made me even safer. He got the car from someone who was loading her groceries into in a parking lot of a large store, not someone who was driving down the street like I was dong. Had he seen my ride home on my mountain bike he may have decided that was just what he needed to escape through the forest preserve in the dark after he turned off the lights....
