Cyclocross - stupid question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

okay, I am a newbie to this. What exactly is a cyclocross bike? How does it differ from a MTB or hybrid?
There is no such thing as a stupid question. Try a search on google "what is Cyclocross" There are some good definitions of the sport. Also check out the "Show us your cross bike..." thread in the Cyclocross forum to see some bikes.

No it is definatly not a hybrid. Traditionally it is nothing but your regular road bike with fatter knobby tires anywhere from 28 - 32's or more perhaps. Now days road racing bikes are more advanced and specilized and wont fit big tires and the sport has developed too. So they make cross specific bikes which are essentially road bikes with a few mods. Forks and rear stays that are wider to allow for bigger tires and usually have braze ons for cantilever style brakes. Also typically the BB is higher to help over roots or whatever is on a trail. Light weight is the way to go w/ cross b/c you need to lift the bike so much. I use and old touring bike set up as a cross bike so I chose the more traditional approach since I can't afford a CX bike at the moment...

It's not a modified hybrid as many people think. Compared to their older rad brothers CX bikes have slightly more relaxed geometry and higher bottom brackets, slightly longer wheel base... in esence, it's a modified road framethat can take some serious off-rad beating. CX was developed as a bike for winter seasaon for road cyclists. However, over time it evolved from strictly an off-season training rig to a category of its own.
Hybrid bikes are usually menat for city and ocasional rding on the grass and very easy off-raod. Hybrids are not meant for racing, their geometry is even more relaxed and often the frames are not state of hte art as with CX, road and MTB bikes. MTBs are agai a category of its own. They are very different because theyis sole purpose is riding and racin on off-raod (many CX races involve both road and off-road riding). MTBs also come with a ton of different features, purposes and geometries so hat CX really looks much closer to a road bike than a MTB (and in essence CX is really a modified road bike for ocasional off-road use).
