...to our family.

At a meeting with an old friend this week, a guest that showed up happened to head up the Humane Society in Chama, NM. I mentioned that our blue heeler Merry was getting up in years now, but she's been such a good dog for where we live that we'd been considering another heeler puppy, especially another female.

This lady just emailed me these pictures of a rescued heeler puppy....and I'm falling in love.

Bonus: Since she'd just be sending them off to a Denver rescue anyway, she said that the usual $45 adoption fee would be waived, even though she's had all her shots and a worming.

What does Foo think?

This is a cute puppy with nice eyes - looks like he/she would have a good personality. I'd say go for it.

It's a she.

Other info: just like Merry, the pup was born with a bobbed tail. The mother is a near feral neighborhood dog so none of the pups used to people, but at 4-6 weeks or so, it's a good age to get her acclimated.

I am presently stuck on "Sparkle" as a name. Any other suggestions? "Merry" was chosen because she was such a happy puppy, but we already had a "Happy" in the extended family.

Stick with the seven dwarfs theme. How 'bout Dopey?...not to say he is. But it'd be a fun name and easy to say for training purposes. Like 'they' say, steer clear of hard consonant names. E.g. Doc probably wouldn't be as good.

HHmmm, I live an hour from Chama. Should I pull an "Ebay Snipe" on Wordbiker?

Nah. Cute puppy. Hope it works out!

What a cutie. Any idea of the breeds? Looks like it may be part pit bull, which would reduce the probability of adoption in this household.

One of the Doctors at the office Mrs. Z works at is bringing us a young outdoor cat for consideration tomorrow. I'm not ecstatic, since I have no idea what the dynamics would be between it, and Cocoa and Pebbles, and because I was looking forward to not having to run a heating element outside this winter since Catnip passed. However, all the rabbits and voles that now inhabit the yard tell me something is needed.

I was concerned about that too.

If you look at the wider shot before I cropped it for clarity, from what my new friend says the Mom looks just like the blue-eyed pup in this pic and is built like a heeler with the stumpy legs, about 40 lbs.

Dad must've been some sort of cattle dog for "Sparkle" to get the distinctive heeler markings.

Oh, and palesaint...I have her home phone where the puppies are. No sniping gonna happen. ;)

Making plans to head over now...

The current name of choice is "Mercy" due to it being a rescue puppy. My wife suggested it and I like it. Different, yet close enough to "Merry 2". Poor Merry...we're not replacing you, just bringing you a new friend.

She's such a baby, wants to sleep all the time. We've been keeping her up so she'll sleep through the night. So far she hasn't had any accidents in the house either. We take her out to do her business and she does. :)

How does your older pooch get along with the new pup?

Wordbiker
09-19-09, 10:30 PM
They haven't had much time together. As expected, they're all a bit leery, but none have been aggressive.

BTW, we have Merry and two inside cats, Sundae and The Catboy.
