General Cycling Discussion - maintenance/repair books?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can anyone recommend a good maintenance/repair book? I have been riding for a while, but relying on LBS for all repairs and stuff. I wanna learn more. I'd also like to do some upgrades, but I would like to do it myself for fun(?).

There's also a complete Barnett's Manual here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=38747)

Funny, I was also going to ask about maintenance/repair books today until I saw 311miles's post. :)
While looking at Amazon I found Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance, Third Edition (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1884737994/ref=pd_rhf_p_3/104-3807975-1782334?v=glance&s=books&no=*), Bicycle Repair Manual (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0756602955/qid=1090446801/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3807975-1782334?v=glance&s=books) and Bicycling Magazine's Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1579540090/ref=pd_bxgy_text_1/104-3807975-1782334?v=glance&s=books&st=*). What would be the best book? I'm leaning towards the Zinn because I have a MTB.
You can also download the Barnett's Manuals (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=38747) in the Bicycle Mechanics forum.
I was going to recommend the Bartlett's Manuals and Bicycling Magazine's repair book. I got beat to the punch.
The Park Tool book I have on bike repair isn't so bad- some illustrations, and I think it would go well withthe Bartlett's Manuals.

The Zinn books are pretty good but there is about a 60% overlap between them - for obvious reasons entire sections are copied straight. The difference is mainly in the equipment covered so the MTB one covers suspension forks, hydraulic disc brakes, tubeless tyres and so on. The road one does tubular tyres, caliper brakes..... As a result the MTB book is somewhat heftier than the road one. For me the best bits about them are emergency repairs section at the start of both books which is something the Barnett's manual don't touch on.
Even if you don't have any campagnolo stuff, their spares manuals and tech notes are well worth looking at to get an idea of how stuff works - see www.campagnolo.com
