I thought you folks might enjoy some pics of my ’86 Santana Arriva, purchased new the year after my wife and I got married. I’m posting this in both the Tandem forum as well as the Classic and Vintage forum. I may put it in the Southern California forum too.

I’m happy to say that it’s still in pretty good shape. I recently did some refurbishing on it, cleaning it up, replacing cables and tires, etc. I still need to pull the bottom brackets and headset someday, but that can wait awhile. I know that nobody uses foam handlebar pads anymore, but we liked them then, and we still like them now.

Notice the old Arai Drum Brake. Now they just put big old disc brakes on them.

Very nice condition...we had a 1980 Sovereign. It had the same shifting, gearing and brake configuration as yours. We rode it for many years and purchased a new Santana Sovereign a couple of years ago.

Congrats on your new Sovereign. I'm amazed at some of the design innovations in the last 25 years. I'd love to get a new one to go along with this one.

We ordered ours in June of 1984 and it came equiped similarly except it had a Stronglight crankset. We still have it and it was at the GWBR for several years.

We were at the GWBR back in those days. We might have seen you. I've often regretted not getting back to the rally since those days, especially since I had so many friends in the L.A. Wheelmen way back then. We never took our tandem there, so I'm guessing that 1984 or 85 was our last year there.

I bought my 1982 Santana used in 1983. Still riding it!

Santana makes a solid bike, and it seems that their owners take good care of them. I've never seen a Santana that wasn't in great shape.

Well, maybe good shape.

The Santana I picked up this summer wouldn't shift (dead rear brifter), the brakes squealed (front only), the "suspension" seatpost was dead (elastomer at end of life - no remaining ability to shrink or expand), and the rear tire was full of little holes. [very strange - held 30-40 PSI, but when we added air for a tour the tube came through one of the holes, at which point we discovered that all the texture on the one sidewall was really more holes].

The paint was in fine shape though.

I think you're right! I should have taken my kids when they were younger. I guess it's never too late, right?

In 87 after my daughter was born we got a Burley trailer to haul behind the Santana. What a train that was. She loved riding in it all over the SG and SF valleys. My son (b 91)did not like it at all so that was the end of it for a few years. (he is now in his 1st year at Purdue)
