The Santa Cruz (formerly known as Sentinel) Triathlon is a standard olympic distance race. 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run... that should be fine background.
So, race day i got up at 5:45, had my usual pre-race meal (bowl of cereal and milk) and went to the transition area. They had body marking on the way in and weren't supposed to let people in transition without it. Then due to an "administrative error" they said you could go set your stuff up and then get body marked... luckily i was already in +1 for arriving early.
I set up my transition as normal, bike shoes, run shoes, socks, belt, nutrition, all layed out how i normally put it.
We walked down to the beach to see the swim exit and swim start (you swim around the Santa Cruz Pier). if you are one of the leaders on the swim you can sight off guys paddling surf boards with green shirts. if not it's not that bad to navigate. I was in the first wave because there were no pros. It is a beach start so, we ran down and started swimming. I am a very strong swimmer, so i finished in about 22 minutes
Out of the water, we ran up a hill to transition, T1 went smoothly, passed up a guy fumbling with the shoes on the bike deal, held him off for about 4 miles. I have not been training (it's water polo season for me) so the strong swim put me in the top ten to start the bike, and then i was getting passed for the rest of the day. The bike was alright though, not very hilly, just some rollers, I averaged about 21 mi/h and completed the bike in about 1:10.
Then Whoops! I hop off my bike (with my shoes still on the pedals) and doh! one of my shoes fell off. I did not notice until halfway in transition, but i decided to put on my run shoes before i went and got it. Luckily one of the volunteers brought it over to me.
Off on the run it was a flat 6.2 mile course, out and back. The run is by far my weakest event, so i finished the run in 1:01
Final time was about 2:40, could i have done better? yes, did i train? no (besides water polo). I am happy with the result though. First standard olympic (i did alcatraz, but that's weird). I will set a goal of at least 2:30 for next season. (this is probably my last this season, but we will see what else comes up)
