Foo - U.S. Maps are not to scale

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. An interesting fact I learned on my Alaskan cruise.....Alaska is about 2 1/2 times the state of Texas.
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/area.shtml
WTF? Every map of the U.S. I've ever seen, Alaska looks to be about 1/2 the size (at best) of Texas.
The trip was awesome though....will try to get pics up as soon as I can.

apparently not.
I was also surprised to learn that Alaska is not off the coast of California.

According to "The West Wing" TV show the Gall-Peters is the most accurate projection map.
In which case Alaska looks to be larger than most of the contiguous US.

The Mercator projection I have hanging over my desk has a scale that is adjusted for the distortion at higher latitudes. It's pretty handy, plus it proves that Greenland is really purple, while Iceland is orange, and Madagascar is pink.
As far as I know, an interrupted sinusoidal projection really gives the most accurate representation of scale, but angles get screwed up, just like in any equal area map.

Not until I got to Sarah Palin's old house. ;)
Yeah, it has to be that big so's they can keep an eye on Putin.
:innocent:
Anyway, it's the projection, as has already been mentioned.

I had a college professor that was a big proponent of the Peter's PC map.
I agree, it's near useless.

I was referring to the "crowning" creature.................. not the boss. You should teach them some more genteel terms than "I am going on a bombing run". Might I suggest "I have to go drop the kids off at the pool."?
"Going to lose some brown weight" and "I have to go see a man about a horse" are both in my rotation.

Umm...what's your definition of cheap? Some of these are less than $10. Granted, they're not very versatile, but the impression of 3-D realism is pretty good.
