careful what you ask for, there are some pretty gross pictures of this on here.

I have seen this happen far too many times.

My hand steers clear of the chain when I am operating upon my bike.

A friend got a few fingers caught in what was a pretty slack chain... he cut his fingers to the bone and actually chipped them.

Had the chain been tight and things been spinning a little faster we'd be calling him lefty.

I haven't seen it with a fixed gear but, working in bike shops, I've had bunches of little kids get a finger caught between coaster brake chains and sprockets. In every case that I've been personally the kid has stopped before they got too seriously hurt but they couldn't get their finger out because the coaster brake won't let it turn backward. It usually requires a 15 mm wrench to loosen the chain tension while mom looks on in horror.

If you can still make the sale after that happens, you're good.

it'll grow back!

Don't worry, as long as it's the fingertips down to as far as your nails it'll grow back. I have heard of similar things happening with disk brakes too.

My baby brother did last week! I had my bike upside down because I doing some stuff and I walked away for a few minutes to get some things. Soon after I left we hear him scream. He played with the pedal and turned the wheel a little while his hand was on the chainring right near the chain. Lucky the wheel didn't turn very much or else he would have had more than just a cut and pinched finger.

Somewhere back in the archives is a nice photo set of a guy who actually took the end of his finger clean off.

Just did my left index finger tonight... :injured:
Slack chain, spinning to investigate..
Into number 47t she went. :o
Just got the tip on the side as I was pulling my finger back, but she still got a small chunk.
