RoundTrip

A little history before I start spouting out crap about buying my first road bike:
I've been riding MTB's since probably 4 years old. Recently I moved out, and started riding a lot. I wont put a rack on my car, so I usually end up riding to and from my ride (hence the lame username of "RoundTrip"). Anyhow, riding a bunch of road stuff in-between my trails has really turned me onto this paved stuff. I've been seriously considering buying a road bike, but since I'd never ridden one..I went and took a few test drives this morning.
Bikes ridden : Felt F60 Triple, and a Trek 2200
The Felt was more of a nice entry level rig, where the Trek...well I fell in love with how smooth that bike felt. I think if I were to go Trek, I'd probably get a 2100, but before I go out and drop that much on my first bike...I was hoping to get some suggestions. I think the only prerequisites I have are that the bike be smooth and not punishing, and that the brakes be good. The brakes on the Felt felt pretty weak, and i'm used to my boat anchor V-brakes on the Full suspension GT i've been punishing myself on the roads with.
I'm up for any brand suggestion, as long as I can find it in town and take a ride.
Thanks,
Colin
