View Full Version : Quill stem suggestions needed

Hello everyone,
I need some help here.
Namely, I want to buy a 90 to 105 degree either 120mm or 130mm 1 inch quill stem for my cross bike. It's an older Italian frame that comes with a threaded fork. I wanted to get a Salsa SUL Road stem, but I was told that they don't make those quill stems any longer in steel. Does anyone know what other stems I can consider? I've been browsing the web for quite a while without much luck. It seems that the only stems these days are standard non-quill stems. Can you tell me if you know a good web site where they might have some good stems (lder ones are fine too). Thank you.

it's all high end track stuff but may have what you need. At least I remember seeing steel threadless stems there...

If you're not doing a vintage resto why not just buy a threadless stem adapter from Nashbar (around $12) then you have infinit choices for stems.

Ok. At the risk of sounding like a total newb, how would I use the adapter, having never used a threadless stem myself. I see I would insert the long part in the tube like a quill, but do I then just clamp the stem on to the top part? Could it really be that easy? :)

Yeah, it is! I am using quill to threadless adapters on 4 of my bikes. I like it because it took me a while to get the reach dialed in, and threadless stems with 2-bolt bar clamps are easier to swap than quill stems. In fact I have several stems in different lengths. You are welcome to borrow some if you want to try different lengths.

My LBS said I can't use the adapter because my headset is too narrow, not quite an inch. Then said there's nothing I can do, even swapping out the fork. I'm taking it in to another for a second opinion. I never believe there's nothing that can be done. :)

Headset too narrow? What did they mean by that?
