Not everybody believes protein belongs in an on-bike
energy drink. But companies that do add protein to the
carbohydrate allege several significant benefits.

A new independent study appears to support the claims.

The study appears in the July issue of Medicine &
Science in Sports & Exercise, the journal of the
American College of Sports Medicine. It was funded by
James Madison University and compared a conventional
carbohydrate sports drink (Gatorade) to a
carbohydrate-protein drink (Accelerade).

The study found a 29% increase in endurance with the
carbohydrate-protein drink in a first ride, and a 40%
increase in endurance in a second ride 15 hours later.
In addition, the carbohydrate-protein drink reduced
"muscle damage" by 83%.

Researchers noted, however, that further testing is
needed to determine how much of the improvement can
be credited specifically to protein as opposed to
Accelerade's higher caloric content. You can read the
