Hello, I have a Garmin 305 GPS system on my Caad 8, I already have cadence but I'm thinking about getting a HRM. Does anyone on here have one? Is it a good training tool? Is the strap that wraps around you comfortable?

Yes, Yes, and Yes. Check this one out:

The strap is comfy and easy to adjust, 3 zone with quick interview setup, and all the stats you need. Doesn't ever drop signal on me either.

Yes, definitely get the HRM Strap - I would think you only need to get the strap, the rest of it is already built into the 305. The strap is reasonably comfortable - you get used to it quickly, and don't notice it during the ride.

It's an excellent training tool, when combined with some information on how to train with heart rate. There are numerous books out there on heart rate training, try to find one with some simple training plans, then work from there.

To clarify - the Garmin 305 already has a built-in heart rate monitor, the OP just needs to purchase a transmitter strap, not an additional HRM unit.

I have the 305 with HR and Speed/cadence. Strap you don't even notice, and I have no signal issues even taking into consideration my route (I bike commute) runs under high voltage power lines for much of it.

Only complaint I have is Garmin Connect. If you have your unit set to auto-pause it skews the HR and cadence data because it graphs the pause with no data in that paused period. Training Center and SportTracks handle it just fine.

Right, all I need is the strap. Thanks for the great replies. Gonna order one now!

The heart rate monitor can be fun to fool around with. Heart rate is a good proxy for intensity of various parts of your work out. It gives you an objective gauge. Such as if you are riding with a group and getting dropped and look down at your heart rate and see that your heart rate is over 90% of your max heart rate, you are not giving up. You are giving out.
