As if we didn't know who the best TT rider in the world was. The guy is just amazing. Nice ride by Zirbel.

The style in which he won still was hugely impressive though.

Zorro,
Definitely agree with Cancellara but for men's road, I'll go with Sammy Sanchez.

Yes, Spartacus is a done deal. I'll be off in the woods this weekend when the road race goes down. Will have to catch up with it afterward.

fabian made it look easy. Did they say the road race has 15000ft of elevation gain? Holy

Anyone got a link to see it?

having spent a week oblivious with nose to the grindstone (work, not riding).

Looks like about 200m climbing per lap, 19 laps; that would be about 12,500 ft.

Thanks - just watched the recap of the time trials, pretty amazing ride by Cancellara.

I was hoping K. Armstrong would have pulled the double gold. But she just finished off the podium. Pretty good ride for her in the road race. Thought she had a shot catch the leader after the way she looked in the TT, but she didn't have it in her legs today.

I think Ballan might be able to pull off a repeat.

looks like Valverde is speculating, rather giving Rodriguez a medal than pulling up Cancellara...

Well done, Evans, great ride.

But I can't help feeling that Cancellara was still the strongest today, but maybe handicapped a little tactically by being too much of a loudmouth before the race. ;)

Cancellara... 6.5 hours in the saddle and loses by 30 secs, that's gotta hurt.

I'm glad he won. I feel he deserves it after being so close to winning so many grand tours.

Very impressive by Evans and Australian team. Well deserved and a beautiful race as well. A most fitting world champion!

I didn't see much of the Australian *team*... ;)
...which makes Evans' victory even more impressive if you compare it for example to the support the Italians had, or even the Swiss.

:thumb: for Evans - that was a great race, and to still race like that after the season he's had, that says something.

Watching it made me appreciate Phil Liggett, though, as the lack of commentary made it very difficult. Trying to make out numbers and going back and forth from the entry list to see what the heck was going on and who was where was a real PITA.

Yeah, great win for Evans! He deserved the win. Cancellara was a bit hasty in the last few k's, should have let the others attack first instead of dragging them about. Quite the attack by Evans - especially as he is slated as a non-attacking rider, once I saw him on the climb you could see he was going to hold it, looked very strong indeed.

Laggard

I rather enjoyed it without commentary. Between their national team, knowing who were the favorites, their team logos and just their face and riding style it was fairly easy to tell who was who.

what an amazing amount of time and mileage/kilometerage in the saddle. was this like the equivalent of 150+ miles?

You didn't watch the whole race hey.
The Australia team worked as one to pull back the break before the last 40km making Evans and Gerrans able to be there to the end and Evans to win....Looks like a team to me. O'Grady, Rogers, Hayman and Co. gave Evans the chance. A team win for sure - image from Velonews and Graham Watson:

and for what it meant to him (same emotions when he had the yellow in the TdF 08), i figured he would've had a huge victory wingspan at the finish! happy for him. and, yeah, a former MTB champion conquers the road as a champion:thumb:

Just Curious, but did no one watch this on universal sports? TBO, at least they show a lot of cycling on that channel wothout all those male enhancement/Cadillac commercials. I'm glad for Cadel as he deserves this after a season of criticism and his bad finish in the TDF. I was really surprised that Contador wasn't there representing his country. I know each country could have up to nine riders so where was he?

Nice to see Evan finally get a big win. He rode very well at the Vuelta. He had some serious bad luck catching that punture at the start of a huge climb. It probably cost him 2nd place and at least a shot at Valverde in the final ITT. It was good to see a guy go all out in the Vuelta, just last week, and then turn around and win the World Championship. I was never a fan of Evan up until these past couple of weeks.

Contador decided that he was out of form (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/sep/03/alberto-contador-pulls-out-cycling-world-championships):

"After looking back at my season, and given the fact that I haven't competed since the Tour de France, we have decided it was better to give up my place to someone else," Contador said in a statement. "To get ready for the worlds would require a major effort and the riders who are currently racing at the Spanish Vuelta will probably come in a better condition."

As for each country being allowed to enter nine racers: An interesting point. This only applies to the ten first countries in the UCI's classification by nation. Because of the great results this year by Hushovd, Arvesen and Boasson Hagen, my country is nine on the list (USA is ten). To be honest, we had to dig deep to fill up our quota. Whereas a great cycling nation like France is 11 on the UCI's list this year and could enter only six riders.

240GL - Norway did themselves proud. I got to watch the entire race - from KM 0 to KM last (eurosport ran 468 minutes of coverage and I had it on DVR).

Hear what you mean about the team sizes. Luxembourg couldn't even ride as many riders as they were qualified to start! Ashame because Kirchen looked like he wanted to go for it but once Andy S left earlier in the race he was on his own against the larger teams.

I still can't quite believe Evans did it. I'd love to see the moment of the actual attack; I watched some clip on youtube where the broadcast missed the instant of the attack, but only caught-up with it just after he'd pulled away!

Evans has got to be one of the toughest most determined cyclist I have ever seem.He does not have a pleasing style, he seems to be fighting the bike all the time.I was happy to see him win though.
