I've been having issues sleeping the past year or so, reasons too numerous to go into here.
Doc prescribed ambien because "its not addictive, and you are less likely to get up in the middle of the night and do things like eat (and not remember it) or go for a drive (and not remember or wake up in jail and wonder why you were arrested for driving into a tree).
Anyway, I took my first dose last night and only woke up once... and found myself on the couch in the living room.
Um, I went to sleep in the bed. I got up and went back to bed...
Weird.

Weird.
I had to take it once while I was in the hospital dealing with MRSA. The best sleep I've ever had. And the nurses were freaking hot!

I am a classic insomniac.
But I'm too afraid to take drugs unless I really really have to. :(
Google, "Ambien sex."
Interesting side effect.

I've had problems sleeping my whole life. I've done Ambien and Lunesta. No problems with either. But Lunesta is better - 'cept for the taste in my mouth like I was sucking on a penny all night.
Ambien worked for me - once. Last time I took it I was up all night. And I was kinda horny, now that you mention it.
Lunesta does work better but makes me dopey the next day. Ymmv
A shot or two of tequila works better than any drug...

You my friend are perfect for Couchology. PM KingTermite for our latest book named, "Couchenetics".

I have cracked the 5mg ones in half. Take a half if I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Seem to wear off in 2-3 hours.

On a flight from the far east to DC, took an ambien with a bourbon and didn't wake up until Oklahoma. Good stuff.

My wife is a Lunesta rep and agrees wholeheartedly!

My Loco Mexican Friend (tm) says the same thing.
I would say if thou art having trouble sleeping, go for a run/hard bike ride/swim/whatever a few hours before bedtime, then hop in a hot bath for a bit, right before bedtime.

You can add sex to luddite's list. Alone or preferably with someone.
My ex took Ambien. Every night she ended up in a different place. One night in the garage. The next out front. Trashing the living room and dining room. All kinds of crazy crap.

Yeah but I think it has to lead to orgasm, ie: no orgasm, no sleepy after.
I'm one of those weird people that sleeps like the undead 99% of the time, even with my generalized anxiety, even if I drink a bunch of tea late in the afternoon. I may even be able to sleep during exams.

I'm male. An orgasm is a given. :p
Anyhow, I also sleep like the undead provided that I am well. Not so much lately.

Only time I had major probs sleeping (quit eating too) was the week before I told my ex husband to GTFO. The stress of not knowing what his reaction would be...well, that was unpleasant. Good way to drop 7 lbs in a hurry though.
i use it when i'm on flights that last 8-12 hours, or when i'm in a jetlag rut.
as far as it not being aditctive, i'm not so sure about that. the father of a good friend of mine has been popping ambien for years. he can't sleep without it.

A good hard ride and a few beer does it for me.
Sometimes it's just the good hard ride.
I took it after my dad died. No trouble quitting, slept like a baby after I met Tricia.
I have gone to Starbucks with a friend and taken photos of her breasts on my camera phone, and not known anything about that night until the following day, when she told me to check my phone. I have quite clearly hallucinated a clown (more of a jester, actually) in my bedroom after taking one and staying up late.
So it's been exactly a year, but I still have them, because it's damn fun to take one and then try to stay up and see what happens.

Anyone we know?

zolpidem?
you can't get ambien or lunesta in canada, but i tried some prescription ones: Imovane, it's like lunesta. My mother had a prescription and gave me a few, after I had a bike accident and it was impossible to sleep the first couple of nights. it really did work but it gives you a blechy taste in your mouth. ALso, i found that even if you sleep it off, you still feel kind of tired the next day.

Temazepam
Ambien is the one that makes people freaky, like waking up from a dream that you're walking down the street stark nekkid only to find out it's not a dream...:D
I've had some good results with Temazepam, but I like Brian's solution much better. If only...:)

My sister shaved half her head on Ambien one night, and would have shaved the rest of it if the razor hadn't jammed up with hair.
I know endurance racers who use Ambien to sleep the night before a big race, or during multi-day races when they're too jacked to sleep otherwise.
Moderate exercise works to an extent, but go too hard and you'll toss and turn all night.

Keeps me awake as effectively as caffeine.
I don't care what the add's promise, Cialis keeps me up all night.

Weird.
You need to get a new doctor. Ambien can be very addictive. Most docs will only prescribe for 30 days at a time. I take Zolpidem which is an Ambien generic. The type of Ambien that does not get you up at night is Ambien CR I am not even sure if they prescribe Ambien anymore.
I take Zolpidem, it is not time released like the regular Ambien but I am very happy with it. I only take one when needed. Usually on Sunday nights when my routine has been interrupted by the weekend or when I am off on tour and want to make sure I get a good nights sleep before a long next days ride.

I said it only works properly with another person.
