General Cycling Discussion - need some saddle help

Im on my second body geometry saddle and the thing is killing my sit bone. The original that came on my 03 SJ was tollerable, but broke and was replaced by my lbs at no charge. I CANNOT get this new one to break in. I have tried everything imaginable to get it set up right, and have had no luck. I did experience minor numbing with the original one that broke, but this one is worse. It is the same saddle, but certainly doesnt feel like the old one did. Im thinking a wider one may suit me better, yet there arent many lbs's that carry a variety, and ive yet to find a shop that had any I could sit on to try. I know, you dont know until you ride on it, but I cant even sit on a saddle after my ride 2 weeks ago. The sit bones still hurt. If any of you could point me in the direction of a wider saddle that I could look into, it would be greatly appreciated. I would like to keep the weight down as much as possible. The thin padding doesnt bother me, its not being able to ride due to a sore arse that does. If it helps, I do wear shorts with the chamois as well.

no, its a mtn bike.

Gee! I don't have that problem any more! That nice Rans seat with a mesh back and the variable density foam pad is pure heaven!

Why not try a different saddle since the BG bothers your butt so much? You're not married to it. It's ok to break off the relationship. ;)

Is there a difference between mountain and road saddles? I'm struggling with the same problem now. I put 2000 miles on a Flite and probably the same on a San Marco and both are no good for me. I just got a Fisik Areone yesterday and plan on putting about 60 miles testing today. Fortunatlly for me my lbs is good and will let me keep testing saddles till I find the right one. I like the philosophy of the Aerone saddle. It has a more flat surface and flexes to conform to your fit. The surface has more contact area rather then some saddles like my san marco that has gel inserts that touch only certain points. The areone distributes the force over a wider area. Well anyway I'll know more later...

I've been using a Brooks saddle (B17 Standard) on my mtn bike commuter for about a month now. After riding about 1000 km's on it, I can safely say I would never use another saddle.

The most comfortable my butt has ever been on any bike, by far.

Modern style saddles will never "break in"; only leather Brooks saddles will change their shape.
You have to find a make and model whose shape matches your own. For this reason, a personal recomendation from someone of a different shape is worthless.
I'm searching around for a new saddle as well, and it is a pain in the butt. All those ergonomic features and three-letter acronyms and they still don't work.
Ive used a Brooks and it was great for a few years until for some unkown reason, it stopped being comfortable.
I'd like to see a range of saddles in big/med/small, narrow and wide, with varying contour styles. Looking at the saddle catalogues I just don't know how to compare 2 models. The main differences seem to be weight and the type of metal in the rails. That is not exactly top priority in a saddle.

Oh dear... what shape is your butt? Mickey Mouse shape? Smarties shape? Amphibious landing craft shape? Poke in the eye shape?

I've had a Brooks Conquest on my last 2 MTB's. It is way comfy- old-school rear suspension!

All my other bikes have Brooks saddles. It's not a weight thing, or a style thing- it's about comfort. I ride further, faster when I can sit down, sometimes;-)

I'll chime in....Brooks B-17. I own two.

Its "buns-of-steel" shaped, if you must ask.
