It pegged me (correctly) as Canadian, however, I do have a bit of an American "twang" due to being raised by my mother who was born and raised in Idaho.

That was fun!
Northern for me.

Interesting, since I was born in Virginia, spent the first 5 years of life up and down the East Coast, then was 'reared' in Austin, Tx. - noted for its accentual (real word?) neutrality. Since then, I've lived in 3 other countries and many states.

I'm a calico. Hmmm is the 'northern' accent the calico cat of the US accents?

Not sure. Bronx <> Boston <> Chicago <> rural vermont <> Minnesotan

is it a catch all? Hmmm.......

"What people call the "Minnesota accent." Sounds almost Canadian. You may have even been asked if you were from Canada before."

Funny... as many Canadians ask me "where are you from" or think I am from the Maritimes.

the australian kind of US accent, unlike my brother who has lived in Indiana for 15 years. he tries to speak with the aussie accent while talking to me, ha, its funny.

To most people down here (regretabley alot are pretty thick down here) yes the canadian accent is considered american.
sometimes the irish accent gets mitaken for american too!

I got northern.
considering my proximity, within 300km, of that zone on the canadian side, I would say it's spot on.

Maybe the canadian accent has a stronger french accent.

Southern

You can drive a short distance[100 miles] from where I live and the speech is entirely different. There are enclaves in the NC mountains that still speak the old "kings english".

I got Northern which is pretty much correct since I grew up in Rochester NY. It is soft though and the influence of my wife. I was born in Missouri.

If I wasn't focusing who knows what it would have come out as since I kept trying to pronounce the words like a Latino...

It is the easiest way to talk to someone who knows English from school down here, the teachers all have Latino accents, so the kids don't understand any accent other than Latino.

It pegged me accurately as Northern; I grew up in Toledo. Oddly when I now visit the States with my Latvian wife I'm often asked where I'm from due to my accent, yet many people think Mrs Z is a native American! It's bizarre.

northern, which is hardly a surprise.

then again "Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo" or "Western New England" is hardly specific.

You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

All they have to do to differentiate between the Inland Northern and the Western New England accents is ask whether you say Pop or Soda.

They need to work on their quiz just a bit more.

It pegged me as Northeastern which is odd as I've never lived in the Northeast. Even funnier is that I know I did not choose the answers for many I saw that I remember sounding funny when some of my Northeastern friends growing up said them.

how do you pronounce aunt?

old and new
09-25-09, 10:16 AM
NC mostly says ant, deep, deep south, MS, parts of southern GA I've noticed say Aunt (ont). I'm or. from NYC area.. ant, northern Jersey as well as RI say Aunt. That word's a good example. Brooklyn has it's own accent.
