Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - My velcro died

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yup....the velcro on my Diadora shoes is now essentially kaput. I felt like riding tonight, though, so I throw the ole clips n' straps on the fixie and go out for a spin. First ten minutes I mostly fumbled around trying to get in my clips. Practiced until I could do it without having to stop to hold on to a street sign to get in the clips (don't laugh....these pedals are evil). Eventually work up to practicing my track stands and skids. My eventual conclusion? Clipless>shoving beef under your eyelids and jumping into a pit of weasels>riding clips n' straps. I know, I know, some of you love them thoroughly and completely. Personally, though, after tonight I may never touch them again. My big toes effin' hurt...
I have tried them in the past and I just do not like the straps. Give me the clipless anyday. Sure my foot has clipped out on it's own accord once in a while but it's no where near as frightening as having your strap bust on you.

Used a 20% off coupon for Performance last night on a new pair of shoes. The Eggbeaters will make a return as soon as they arrive.

my clipless shoes have laces AND velcro.
but I usually only throw my cheapo spds on for longer weekend rides. for commuting and tooling around the city I find sneaks with clips and straps more convenient

I'm just a big fan of the super cheap shoes...the traverse II from performance is one of my favorites...good ventilation and such, uses laces, and actually looks kinda like a normal shoe...but I still wish there was a cafe cover for spd cleats.
