Apologies for the poor cell phone photo -- I took this five minutes ago at a local yard sale as I was dashing home for lunch break. A Raleigh Record, appears to be in great shape, with a $40 price tag. Stem shifters, rear rack. I don't know where in the Raleigh hierarchy the Record stands. Worth buying for myself?

You really do not need to know Raleigh's hierarchy. Just look at the bike: steel rims, stem shifters, turkey levers, high ten steel frame, cottered steel crank. That's bottom end.
At the same time, if it is ready to ride, the price is cheap.
So the real questions are what are you seeking, and is it the right size? Even at this low price, it would not make a good flip (not enough up side). But if you are looking for a low end rider at a rock bottom price, you are there.

+2 only it doesn't look like cottered cranks to me on this one.

If it's in good shape, ready to ride, and you're looking for a bike, I'd buy it. That's a good price. A Raleigh Record like that one at $40 would last about 1 hour on CL around here.

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen. I did look up Raleigh Record on BF and learned it was the bottom of the line, but yes, the bike is ready to ride (other than needing the cobwebs dusted off) and this is a chrome-moly frame. I thought that in itself was worth something.
Anyway, I went back and bought it without waiting for advice (sorry). I bargained it down a bit, to $25. I'll post photos tomorrow.

I had one of those back in the day. It was low on the totem pole but a fully functional cyclistic artifact. Never had any problems with it.

OK, here it is, and I think it's a pretty bike -- sorry for the delay, something wrong with Photobucket yesterday (and now today, too). I have some royal blue cork bartape I'll use to replace the black foam to make it even better.
