Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Single Speeds vs. Fixie

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think the best thing you can do is love what you have: bikes, jobs, cars, women, dogs, cats, kids, friends, parents. Love whatever you have right now. Not sure about the order. :P
Singlespeedin is for those of us who don't give a big rat's arse what the rest of you think.

Unless you're fixed, you're never really free.

I tried explaining that to my cats, but they wouldn't listen.

i ride bikes.
Fixed is a bit like driving a nimble old sports car with a finicky transmission. Otherwise, they're pretty similar.
Unless you're fixed, you're never really free.
You are never free as long as you conform.
You are never free as long as you conform.
If you are conscious of your freedom, you have conformed.
If you are conscious of your freedom, you have conformed.
hows that?

I've got both. Love 'em to death. Fixed for the road, free for the dirt.

Apparatus ad rota fixus omnia vincit.
hows that?
Let's just say cultural and societal non-conformity is a bit of a sticky wicket. I'm not sure how or what part of conformity I must eschew to achieve freedom. If I make a conscious decision to be "free," I must be conforming to something, right?
The freewheel side of the flip flop is very handy when one has a sprained ankle.

agreed. however, the "freedom" issue is an illusion at best. there are only degrees of freedom. absolute freedom does not exist for us mortal men and women.

I have a fixed De Bernardi track sled as well as a Surly Steamroller (with 3 purple hearts) freewheeler that was/is my commuter bike. I prize my De Bernardi too much to leave it locked up outside all day in Chicago (when I was living there). I suffer the duality of this question being posed in the thead, and revel in the flexibility and fun of each.

IN the name of riding fixed: Once you go ______, you never go _______.
Riding a freewheel is for those who haven't tried a fixed gear yet.
And even the fixed riders with brakes are *******. I do have a lot of respect for the few people that I've seen (2) riding brakeless on freewheels... But I think they just spun off their lockrings on the fixed side of the hub and were going home to re-build the wheel... It would scare the crap out of me...

is'nt a freewheel like a training wheel for a fixt? :)
I just really don't see the point of goin free unless of course it is a geared bike.
Ride fixt and feel the force. Be...

I never even knew i was riding a 'fixie' until 10 years later, when it became fashionable to ride a fixie.

Yeah, that's what I say!
"I just really don't see the point of goin free unless of course it is a geared bike."
We can still appreciate the lightness, the simplicity, and the challenge.

With some good wheels I could roll around the nation

except when you descend a steep hill and must attach your disc brake.
face it: you're only good for riding smooth flat surfaces.

and while you are on the podium, I am cutting your shifter lines
OK guys, I own geared bikes but am interested in checking out SS and fixed riding. Do I have to get rid of my geared bikes right away or can I keep them around for a while?
Can't I share my ride time between two or even all three of the configurations. Is that just crazy talk?
