Foo - The official BEER thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ah yes, another Friday rolls around and yes, it's time again for "It's Friday evening, let's try some beers we've never had before" Friday.
The theme this Friday - Wintery dark ales and other miscellany.
First cab off the rank - Krusovice
Apparently this is a beer from 'Bohemia' somewhere in the Czech Replublic, which is funny, because it smells nothing like dreadlocks and BO. In fact, it just smells like a beer. That's about the only English on the can, but what I do know is that it's, well, a beer, contains a p1ss-ant 3.8% alcohol, and comes in a very regal black, red and gold can. It's a black ale, very English in it's composure with a typical clean finish, but a pleasant malty sweet taste with just a hint of hoppy goodness. Not a bad drop on a rainy winters night......
mmmm... dark ale.
English 'Tanglefoot' ale lives up to it's name with serious alcohol content. Velkopopovich (dark or pale) another fave

Good times!
For my Friday, I've got a variety of New Glarus brews. http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/beers.html
The Uff-da bock is my year round favorite. A nice diversion from my overdosing on Belgiums.
That Oregon Brewers Fest sound dangerous though...

I just had Old Speckled Hen in a can last night for the first time with one of those Guinness type widgets inside.
Very different from cask-drawn but damned good in it's own right. One of the best beers I've had in a while.

Lost Coast makes a Russian Imperial Stout that is by far the best stout I've had and one of the strongest. It's way too warm to drink these in the summer, I can't wait until fall.
Cheers
Here are the Champions:
Aventinus, Chimay and DUVEL - It is the Slayer of beers.
and when it is still light out and warm some hoegardens.
Ales suck!

Kwak is really good but like most of those ales, they give me the nasties, in my head and out my tail
newcastle is my current fav.

Guinness: it's good and good for you! (unfortunately, due to my current state of unemployment, i've had to go with PBR and High Life these days, plus the occasional Yuengling's Lager or Black and Tan).
but i'll pretty much drink almost anything... except Corona or Coors Lite.

Magic Hat, Long Trail.
Aventinus, Maudite, John Courage, some old Irish beer they stopped importing about 2 years ago supposedly because of Bush's election, its name starts with a C and it is creamy and wonderful. Caffreys Irish Ale!! That's it, I knew I would remember. I also have a taste for Old Mil, Old Style, and Linies, give them another chance with an open mind they are special in their own right, screw Bud and Miller though.
Then there is Strongbow and K ciders MMMMMMM. Make a snake bit, usually its cider and lager but I choose to replace the lager with Bodingtons Ale as it is nice and creamy. A snakebit is NOT cider and Guinness, people that think it is are wrong and give me the wrong drink.
Keystone light is my current prescription. That is what my apothecary prescribes for me. (12 ounces, multiple times daily.)

I went to college in Lacrosse WI and drank my share of New Glarus brews, no luck finding them out west which is a shame. Had a party with a keg of Cabin Fever once, bad move its like 18% or something outragous that shouldn't be considered beer, lots of vomiting, not by me of course but by my fellow party goers.
I always wondered how they make it as the alcohol should have killed the yeast at most 10%.

? What does Bush's election have to do with Caffreys?
? What does Bush's election have to do with Caffreys?
I don't know, I just heard from a bartender in Chicago that Bush's election pissed off the Caffreys people and they stopped importing to America, I realize how far fetched that is but I thought I would share.

But then again, I order NewCastle when I go to the bar...
It's cool (but not surprising) to see some brews from Missoula on the roster for that microbrew fest in Portland, though... Someone's been really pushing the Moose Drool and Slow Elk and everything else from Big Sky Brewing out here - it's in most of the liquor stores. It was really nice when there were a few places that had it on tap out here... A little taste of my hometown out here in the big city :)
paligamy porter, why have just one (brewed in SLC Utah).

Tonight I'll start with a tip of the hat to Lance by drinking a Lone Star (the official beer of Texas) then perhaps a PBR followed by a Black and tan. then I'll round off the evening with another Peeber and a tall glass of water. Last night it was a Beck's dark followed by 2 Killian's and then a Sam Adams Summer Ale. Saturday it will be only water because I want to keep body and mind clean for a big Sunday ride.

At McGlinchys I will usually order a "Flying Fish" which is a great local brew... at home its all PBR!*
My girlfriend likes Brooklyn Lager and Yeungling.... which will do if I am out of PBR... damn, I sound like an alcoholic.
* sometimes I will actually drink water though.
I'd go with Deschutes Black Butte Porter. Brewed in Bend OR by Deschutes Brewing Co. For something a bit lighter Kilt Lifter. A Scottish Ale brewed at Pike Place Brewery in Seattle WA.
I have to admit that an ice cold PBR goes down really smooth on a hot day.

Dammit, y'all...I picked a hell of a time to stop drinking. :(
BUT - when I do, I'm fond of Foster's, Beck's, Grolsch, St. Pauli Girl, Harp, Dos Equis.
LaBatt's Blue is also good.
Once I tried Tsing Tao, and couldn't even get through two of them; stuff's too damn
strong, but tasted great.
Whatever happened to Blatz?
Budvar (spelling?) the REAL budweiser.
Stella Artois, and Carlsberg are particular
favourites that I can get here.
then again I like Old Peculiar and especially a nice
cool Castle, lager or dark ale thank you very much.

My favorites:
Paulaner Salvtor dopple bock
Ayinger Oktober fest-marzen
Deschutes Obsidian stout(Way different than guinness) I think it might be a sweet stout, tastes like esspresso
Alaskan oatmeal stout
Alaskan smoked porter
Snoqualmie Falls Wildcat india pale ale
Most american style Brown ales ie. petes wicked, moose drool, my homebrew(people offered me full retail price for it, I said ok, now its gone:( )
Maritime Pacific Jolly Roger Christmas Ale
Stone Double Bastard Ale barley wine (big bro to Arrogant Bastard old ale)
Steel Reserve 211 high gravity silver label for when you want to get screwed quik and cheap, yet it tastes ok, unlike most malt liquor.(I don't drink 211 but all my mates do and they like it. I did try one. )
what does this have to do with fixed gear/ss?
It's a culture issue for the fixie / ss set. But apparently this thread got moved

Beamish Irish Stout any day of the week, morning or night. This is the REAL Irish beer. If that's not available, I'll try to find Murphy's Irish Red. For casual nights, or domestic-only, I'll drink Leinenkugels.
But my gut will explode if I mix and match the above in one night.

Hear, hear.
I could only get that when living in Minneapolis; they seem to limit exports
to just the goofy honey/wheat stuff, at least here in the southeast.

It's only Monday, but I'm enjoying a Thunderhead IPA, on sale for $7.50 per sixer. This stuff is amazing - I like a tasty beer on the sweet side. Superb lacing that clings nicely to the glass, nice head, golden or almost caramel in color. Flavorful without being heavy or bitter.
beeradvocate rates it an average B, which is a solid rating but I think it deserves better. Not sure what I would improve.
