Hi everybody!

My name is Lucien and I live in Baltimore. My username is lucien2 because I registered for my first internet forum 10 years ago, before I knew how to pick a username, and "lucien" was taken. "lucien," if you're out there, a pox on you. So anyway I just stuck with it over the years. But I digress.....

So I've been a recreational mountain biker for about 15 years. I'm 34 now, with a baby on the way, and I find myself drawn more and more to road riding. I've already put city tires on my Giant Rainier, and exercise is exercise, but road riding on a Judy fork just isn't fun. Soo the hunt for a road a bike commences....

I love cycling. Even on the MTB, I simply love how I feel after a ride. It does wonders for my stress, and I am looking forward to shedding some pounds, too. Now, I'm kind of a tech/gear head when it comes to things like this. I'm a Subaru nut, you'll find me over at www.nasioc.com or subaruforester.com. I tell you this as a preamble to my bike purchase hunt- I'm ready to spend a fair amount of cash now, because I know in 24 months I'll be wishing I'd bought more bike if I don't. I don't intend to race, but my personality is such that I forsee getting obsessed about biking. With a baby now 2 months away, I suspect this is my last chance to spend some real coin on myself for quite a while.

I notice there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of love for Trek here, which has me worried, because I've just put a deposit down on a 2300. I liked the Cannondale R800 quite a bit as well, but.....it has to do with the LBS. The Trek store is a small shop, run by amateur racers. The Cannondale shop is a Ski/cycle/jogging type sports store, and a bit farther away to boot. The Trek place put me up on a trainer, tried a couple different sizes, and made sure I fit before sending me out. The Cannondale place was more of a "this should fit ya" kind of place. The bike fit fine though, so it doesn't matter much in the end. Because I've never ridden a road bike before (and went shopping ON my MTB), both bikes felt wonderful to me. I was giggling up hills! "Ha! Look at this! I pedal, and like, the bike goes forward!" That sort of thing. But I just discovered you all last night, and the general attitude toward Trek has me concerned that I will feel similarly, the deeper into my riding I get. Of course, it would be most uncomfortable to go yank my deposit for such an amorphous concern.

So any advice, holisitc or otherwise, is much appreciated! :p
