Road Cycling - Trek 1200 or 1500?

Hey all,

I've been looking for a new (first) roadbike, test rode a few...I think Trek is the one for me, but I don't know if I should go for the 1200 or spring the extra $250 for a 1500. 1500 looks pretty sweet, but is it really worth it? Seems like either way you're getting a fair amount of bang for your buck. Any input would be great, thanks.

I would definatley spend the extra money for the 1500. The reason for this is the componets on the 1500 are much better than the 1200.

It really depends on what kind of riding you are planning to do. I own a Trek 1000 (purchased with everything stocked) and have been satisfied with its performance. I am planning on upgrading the tires and pedals, but thats about it. If you have the funds go ahead and purchase the 1500.

I have an '04 model 1200 with about 300 miles on it (purchased it a few weeks ago). I use it as my weekend bike.

I really like it. I did switch out the saddle. Mine came with a 105 rear derailer. Once the shifting is dialed in it works pretty well.

I paid $720 for mine. The 1500 looks good, too. As I recall the wheels on the 1500 are more high performance.

I bought the 1500 last Fall when they first came out. I really like the bike as far as handling goes. Components are great for the price! I rode both, too. And decided to get the 1500 because for the money, the "stuff" is better and I may want to race next season. I guess it all depends on how you want to ride it!

I bought a 1500 about a month ago, it's great.

I bought a 1500 last week for $850.I got it at a local bike shop that has marked there 2004 models down becouse the 2005 models are comming out.Your dealer should be doing the same very soon. I would go with the Trek 1500 because it has a lot better components.Even the tires are better.

Yes, the components are better as is the frame..."Super Light Aluminum" vs. "Aluminum". Lighter, rides smoother...The 1500 is an awesome value compared to the 2200 that I bought in 2001 for $1,600. Trek is giving more "bang for the buck". Don't be left out>>

According to the trek website (and double checking my 1200) both the 1200 and 1500 come with:

FRAME Alpha SL aluminum

FORK Bontrager Race Carbon

It's the 1000 that comes with a lesser frame and an aluminum fork.

All the other componets on the 1500 are better than the 1200. Brakes,shiffters and etc.

I know, I got a good deal, so I bought the 1200 instead of the 1500. Sometimes I like to tourture myself and wonder why I didn't get the 1500 though :D ;)
