I just got a call from my niece and she is interested in buying my Peugeot UO8, (bought in 1971) and my wifes Motobecone womens frame from approx. 1975, both are 10 speed. Neither of the bikes have been ridden since like 1978. They are both in excellent condition as they are stored in my basement and are just really dusty and of course the tires are flat. All I want to know is what approximately they may be worth. I'll be cutting her a deal anyway.

This is not in anyway an offer to sell either bike to anyone other than my niece. Any useable infomation would be appreciated.

Thank you,
John

How handy is your niece? Rehabbing an old French bike has some challenges. Cottered cranks, unique French threading. Even though I am sure the bikes were protected while they were stored, grease, cables, tires, and bearings will need to be replaced. They have been sitting idle for 31 years.

A year ago, I finished a similar project rebuilding my 1975 U08, that had sat idle since 1977. Even though it was rust free and the paint was spotless, I still had to strip it down to the frame, and rebuild everything.

I would put the market value around $50 to $75 each.

My niece is an award winning artist in multiple mediums with a Masters degree in Art therapy and her boyfriend is a electrician. She is good with her hands.

Actually she was planning on taking them to one of the many fine bike shops in Saint Louis and let them do there magic.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. You have been most helpfull.

A: While the electrician will come close, there are still some special, basic tools that are needed to work on any bike that he will not have.

B: CAUTION: Not all bike shops are C&V freindly. Get ready to hear "That bike's too old to be repaired, you need a new bike, like that one over there". So it may take some searching to find a shop that will be willing to work on either bike.

C: wrk101's estimate is spot on.
