Hi wheelbuilders. I am trying to figure out the spoke length for a set of wheels I am building and I have tried a couplle of spoke calculators online and recieved different numbers from them. The United Bicycle Inst calculator is the one I am trusting so far. If anyone with some experience building wheels can check my numbers and verify they are correct that would be awesome.

Tech info from the suppliers websites:

Rims- Sun Ringle Rhyno Lite 700c- erd-612

Hubs- All City track hubs(standard spacing)
Front
Outer Diam-62
Center to Flange-34

Back
Outer Diam-62
Center to Flange- 28

Wheels are 32 hole 3 cross

The spoke length that I came up with is 296.2mm-front and 295.6mm-back according to the spoke calculator. I was just gonna get a box of 296mm spokes for the build, this seems that it should work for both front and back. Is this correct? Also based on these tech numbers is the spoke length correct?

I like the one by Geocities http://www.geocities.com/d_halem/wheel/wheel.html Its very accurate. For the front wheel yes I get 296.3. However for the rear wheel there should be 2 different measurements from the center to the flange, one from the center to the left (non drive side) and the center to the right (drive side). The right side is usually narrower to allow space for the cassette or in your case the cog. To get the right measurement measure the length of the hub (area that touches the inside of the fork). Divide by 2 and mart that spot on the hub. THEN measure center to flange, from that spot (which should be the center) this way you have the left side probably your 28 left and the right side probably 27 or 26. Your drive side spokes will be roughly 1mm shorter or so. I would guess you would need 48x296mm and 16x295mm But you did well those spokes should work.

Oh and the geocities has pre set hub measurements and rim ERDs you can select with the drop down but I usually just do my own measuring.

Thanks for the help. I'm glad someone else is getting the same spoke length measurments I am. As to the Drive Side Non Drive Side issue, it is a flip flop track rear hub so there is no distinction and the center to flange is the same for both sides. I will go ahead and get the 296mm spokes. Thanks for the help.

Read.

A track hub has no dish. Thus no differing spoke lengths.

front = 296.48
rear = 295.85

You should be able to get away with simply using 296.00mm spokes.

- Assumes 14g or 14g/15g/14g spokes.
- Assumes 10mm threads with 12mm nipples
- Assumes 12mm threads with 16mm nipples

You should NEVER trust what it says on the manufacturers website (rims OR hubs). Measure EVERYTHING yourself. Any error (and it's quite frequent in erd) and you're ****ed.

Ditto to operator...

This is why I also included the specs for thread length and nipple combo...cause as operator noted...often time the manus. ERD is off - usually with a bias that goes literally right to the end of the nipple.

Even then...it really is best to do your own measurement for ERD - it's pretty much what I do 99.9% of the time.

If you do go with 296.00mm - make sure the nipples allow the spokes to thread as much as a millimeter past the top of the nipple - this will give you some overhead to work with while tensioning JUST IN CASE it does turn out that the 612mm spec you have was aiming at the top of the nipple.

Have fun, and be sure to put a drop of Triflow or any other lighweight oil at the rim seat / nipple seat before truing.

Thanks all for the help. I'll try and post pics when i am done, this set should turn out rad as I am designing some 1 speed cross wheels(hence the rhyno-track hub combo) It will be all red and black, can't wait.
