my front wheel has some side-to-side play. not enough to rub the brakes, but it kind of rattles in corners sometimes. unnerving.

i brought it by the lbs to have the hub tightened, but they informed me that the hub was tight and that the bearings were just shot and needed replacement. they also said that mavic uses a proprietary bearing design for this wheel and that they are not all that durable, cause they see this a lot.

the bearings will run me around $30 for the wheel.

this is on a wheelset with only 2000 miles on it. i ride over some rough roads sometimes, but nothing horrible. is this a common problem?

Did you try adjusting the bearing preload or actually see the shop do it? The wheel needs to be mounted in the fork with the QR tight, then adjust the bearing cover with hub wrench M40123. Accurate adjustments cannot be made without the wheel being mounted.

I doubt the bearings are shot after 2k unless your wheel is defective.
