Texas - Best LBS in Austin?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've been checking out the bike shops in the north austin area but seems a lot of them are overpriced. Any suggestions on somewhere I should check out? Looking for a road bike if that changes anything.

I like Bicycle Sport Shop. They are overpriced though. I basically use them for service only. The frustrating thing about LBS's is that they want to sell you the brand that they carry. I recently went shopping with a friend and every shop had "the" bike for him.
for most stuff I use probikekit.com ...
Thanks, I did check BSS, didn't have a good aspect of their brand prices at the time but they seemed slightly higher. I do have to understand im not really going to find great deals at these places. Really just looking for somewhere that might have good deals and or just worth giving business to.

I like Ozone (just south of 38th on Guadalupe). Really nice people. They carry Bianchis, Masis, Marins, Haros, Konas (I think) and some others. I just ordered a Bianchi Volpe from them and am impatiently awaiting delivery. Prices seem pretty standard, but they do carry some used bikes and they do have some deals. Delma

Try Buck's Bikes on 183. They were pretty willing to deal on price, especially for previous year's model.

East Side Pedal Pushers if you're near them(5th and Onion. Ozone is good too, nice folks.
Have checked out music city, BSS, and bucks. So far BSS had more of what I was looking at since im going the budget route but im still in no hurry.
I'll put in a vote for Peddler at 51st and Duval. They have always been great to deal with and very low pressure. They're more geared towards the recreation/transportation rider than racers. They sell the QBP brands like Surly, Soma, and Salsa, as well as KHS which is a good value brand.

I used Bucks for my first road bike and bought my upgrade from University Cyclery. Both times I got a pretty good discount because I purchased previous year's models. No complaints with service after the sale. Jack and Adams has great service and I go to them for all my fittings, service and upgrades. BSS also is great on their service.
My next bike I'm buying from LA at his store a 4th and Nueces, and I'll have to drive down there from Waxahachie. That's the coolest bike shop I have ever seen.
It depends on what you want. If you're a racer with lots of money and want to be taken care of then go to Bicycle Sport Shop. They have lots of cool expensive stuff. Otherwise I like Ozone and the Peddler, more easy going shops, never given me any grief and have helped me when I needed help.
Overpriced? Every LBS will be overpriced compared to internet prices. They all take a serious profit on new bikes, that's their bread and butter, best you can do is hit a chain store like Performance Bike during a sale.
I'm about to get flamed, but personally I don't care much for Lance and less for his shop. There are plenty of locally owned shops that need your business more than he does, and they'll pro. If you're going for the celebrity factor, who am I to stop you.

I have to put in a good word for Nelo's bike shop, on Mesa just south of Steck (around 8200 Mesa, don't know the actual address). His shop is definitely on the spendy side, but he's a good guy and a good wrench.
And although they tend to be expensive even as expensive bike shops go, Freewheeling can be a useful resource because they have an almost encyclopedic archive of obscure old parts.

+1 on Nelo's. He stocks a limited number of high end bikes more for roadie / racing types, although he's now partnered in his new space with a tandem bike shop. If you want quiet reflective experience, Nelo is great. I'm certainly no racer and most would laugh at me as a road rider, but you'd never know it by the attention he provides me. Nelo rode and coached the Brazilian national team. All he cares about is are you comfortable and do you enjoy your ride.
Peddler, Ozone, Freewheeling are all good. BSS and Bucks stock the most, I think, but I have never had consisent service at BSS.
Jack and Adam - great for tri bikes. They do a lot of community oriented support, too.
Also, REI north store has some really nice folks who won't make you feel stupid. The wife got a Novara road bike for a heck of a deal when she decided she wanted to try biking, and this was the only store she felt comfortable in.
Hammer Head Cycles if you want a mountain bike. They're hidden back on Burnet LANE (not Burnet Road) Found them by accident but could not have been nicer.

bicycle sport shop has great deals when they have their outdoor sale things going on. i buy most of my spandex on sale here.

ozone has proven to me that they are only money hungry, rude, uneducated bunch of people. my masi road bike's headtube was cracked (aluminum frame) they were very enthused to tell me that my warranty covered a frame replacement, they were NOT enthused when i told them i didn't want to pay them $200 to strip the old frame and put the parts on the new one (and that i could do it myself).

i have a good solid wheel build on my fg bike from the peddler. kudos there.

nelo's carries some of the best brands, IMO. freewheeling staff, at least the younger ones around my age are rude know it alls. as for the shop itself, my friend's family owns it and it is run well, they do their best to please their customer. we found a GREAT road bike there for a friend of mine for very cheap. it is a used 80s trek that was rebuilt up pretty solid. i've never been TO jack and adams, but i have met jack and adam, as well as many of their employees, they frequent the cafe i work at. if you're a loyal customer, they'll be loyal to you, help you out on great deals, but this is a really intense tri shop...
then there's mellow johnny's, mellow johnny's ALWAYS has awesome sales. not to mention their bike swap meet this last weekend. look out for those, road bikes/builds were selling for VERY VERY CHEAP.

Austinbikes (5th street) is a great shop downtown. They recently did a full tune-up on an old Maruishi bike for me, and it felt like a completely new bike. They even threw in a free detailing/cleaning. Those guys are extremely personable and always ready to answer any questions you have about cycling. Also, one of the coolest shop jerseys I've ever seen.
