Mountain Biking - tightening and un tightening your fork.....

i was wondring if the air forks can be re adjusted to then become tighter again. like taking the nob in order to tighten ur fork,but instead un do it and then tighten it again. will it tighten again or will my fork just die once it bottoms out? all helpful comments apprecitated.....

well im kind of confused by your question...traditionally dont you tighten up air forks by pumping air into them?

yeah i think so....but i'm wondering if theres a way to suck out the air and then pump that air into it again like turning the nobs on my fork....if i turn it to as loose as it goes will it be pumped out? err i duno....lol

exactly. It's not god, and you waited aproximately a day to get an answer that doesnt take a lot of thought to figure out.

well the onl air forks im common with have schraeder valves to pump it up. does yours have a schraeder vavle?

Well, everyone who has an answer can't always be around here, so, you have to give more than just under 2 hours for an answer to appear. The question does not make much sense at all, but form what I can understand is that you need to add more air to the fork.

i do use the english language tho...anyway sorry ppl! i'm just getting pretty stressed out cuz this is a new bike and it seems to me like the grease marks on my fork are only 2 inches away from bottoming out.....ive only taken it on a fairly tough trail ( which was yesterday) i bought the bike on sunday too. anyway i duno if i have that valve or not and heres the question a different way....You know how there are knobs on each side of the fork? well i was wondering if you untighten both knobs on either side,to as low as they can go, and then count how many turns for each one, will my fork become filled with more air? when i untighten it does the air get sucked out? if i ride it like it is and it bottoms out soon, will it never be able to be filled with air again and never get tighter? does that help anyone who didn't understand? i hope so. thanks,

harder springs um if its a air shock put more air in it simple! or just go to your bikeshop and ask them duh :D

unless you have an air compressor on your bike, there isnt a miracle valve to inflate and deflate an air fork. there is a new invention called a pump. You might have heard of them before. Its not the same pump as you use on your tires. If you DO indeed have an air fork, you need to get a shock pump so you can inflate to the recommended air pressure for your weight and riding style. If your uncertain about things, contact the bike shop where you got the bike or read the manual that came with your bike. all you are adjusting on your fork with the dials is the speed of the rebound. slower or faster. the air doesnt go bad, so you dont need to change it as if it were oil.

okay so how much do these pumps cost? does anyone know how much that would cost me? i mean i get a month tune-up so i suppose i can ask them then....thanks for the help so far......

well i dont think there is much of a problem, cuz if your still 2 inches from bottoming out, thats quite a ways. an air fork, unless it has very little air pressure, is rather difficult to bottom out because its progressive as it compresses, meaning the more in compresses the stiffer it gets. this means that it may be easy to compress at first, but gets harder ans it goes down. but if it's troubling you just take it too your LBS and get them it put in the proper air pressure to your weight and riding style

o ya and a fork pump will cost you anywhere from maybe $15-$60, depending on the quality you want.

o ok thanks. will they actually pump air into it if i ask them to at my LBS? when i go for a tune-up i'll see if they can help me out or even buy a pump. so will they do it? do they have a pump for this stuff if i go and ask at my 30 day tune-up?

Why don't you go to the LBS, ask them and find out. Since we don't shop at the same store you do, its a little hard for us to say what they have, and what they will do for you.

almost all LBS stores will do that for you, with a service charge if it's not your free tuneup, but sometimes they will do it for free, guess it depends on the mood they are in. just go down and ask, im almost positive they wil do it, but for free or not is the question

You should have gotten a shock pump with your bike. If you bought the rig new, then the pump would be included in the purchase. It's an accessory that comes with the shock.

Additionally, you should've also received a manual for the shock when you purchased the bike new.

Finally, you can probably print out a manual for the shock from their (manufacturer) web site.

Actually I haven't seen one that includes a pump as of yet. My new Stumpjumper w/ a Fox F80x didn't even have one. :mad:

I've been reading that here. Weird... the last two Santa Cruz bikes I bought 4 years ago did come with a pump. I'm going to assume that's not the norm. I do know that if you buy a separate shock as a part then it does come with one ...at least LBS said it did.

I wonder if the manufacturer or LBS is removing them and selling as a separate item. I didn't ask. It's really a minor issue in the big picture.

haha yeah your right seely; and i got out there today to ride my bike and found my front tire to be popped....this sucks, now i hafta pull out my wallet and spend my hard earned cash....but it will be worth it.
