I was at INTERBIKE (bicycle trade show) last week and saw something in a small booth that really seemed like a great idea. It was the Metrigear Vector pedal system that measured power by using piezo sensors inside (Speedplay) pedals.

What was cool was that it could measure power output from each leg both on the downstroke and upstroke.

All the electronics fit inside the pedal shaft of each pedal. Readout will be on your bike computer (garmin, cateye). The company is working with bike computer companies to provide compatibility with the Vector system
