Question for the experienced. I have thought of doing a half Iron Man Triathlon relay with my wife and son. My son, who is 12, would do the swim, my wife the bike (she is a heavy road bicyclist) and I would do the run. My question is about the age restrictions regarding my son. He is more than capable of the swim, and would probably finish the swim near the top (1650m in 22:00). His workouts average 4-5000m a day. He is a freak. I know it may depend on the venue, but do any of you know of age restrictions for triathlons?

I'm not aware of an age restriction from US Tri, but I think it's up to each race and race director to set the rules. I would contact the administration of the race you are thinking of entering and ask this exact question. Since it's a relay, I would think it would be ok.

I've been beat by freakish 13 year olds before. I think it'll be OK but defiantly check with the director.

I started when I was 13... 14 now and my USAT card says 16... haha but for a relay there shouldnt be any problem. My problem now is I would like do an IM in 2 years but they seem to be stricter on making sure you are 18. You shouldnt have a problem. If you are worried, contact the race director. Good Luck!
