Folding Bikes - I FINALLY fixed my Mu P8

I hosed up the grip twist shifter as the allen screw stripped when I tried to move it for a new set of grips. I then ordered what I thought was a replacement which was an MRX Comp SRAM shifter. No go.

Got a Shimano Alivo (I think it's Alivo) trigger shifter and while 8 is really 1 and vice versa which bothers me not in the least. Anyway I have a vinyl sign machine and could make a 1 and 8 which will cover it and look acceptable.

Anyway, it took about 5 minutes to install and get the derailleur shifting right. Got my new grips on and replaced the chain just for the heck of it. Now all I need to do it clean it up and then it's time to ride. Although now it's fixed I have a business trip to go on wouldn't you know. Pics later. No camera with me today when I finished up and the bike is a greasy mess.

Here's a pic of the Mu P8 new Ritchey handlebar, grips and trigger shifter. Got a ride in yesterday and the trigger is MUCH better than the old grip shifter. I'm going to replace the grip shifter on the Speed P8 as well soon I think.

TrekJapan, few questions about the Mu P8 if you dong' mind:

Does it have the Dahon propietry Neos derailleur ?

What are the cable travel requirements of the Neos, 2:1 like Shimano, 1:1 like SRAM, something else?

What about the derailleur pull direction, when you pull the cable, does the derailleur switch to a larger or a smaller cog?

Have you tried to get compatible shifter from Dahon?

yes grip shifter suck. I have just fitted some instead of rapid fire. big mistake!

I think you may find it more comfortable if you put the shifter inboard of the brake lever. That's how Shimano designs them to be mounted, and it makes the brake lever much easier to reach from the grip.

My bike has the NEOS derailleur.

Not sure what the NEOS requirements are but I figured it was just like any other mountain bike.

When you pull the cable it brings the chain down to a smaller cog. With no pressure whatsoever on the NEOS derailleur it sits over the biggest ring. Gotta pull it down. Springs in the derailleur push it back up.

Dahon sucks for spare parts not listed on their website for sale. Sometimes even when they are listed they still suck.

I'd rather shell out $25 of my own and be done with it than get a migraine trying to communicate with them regarding proprietary parts.

I installed it like that initially and didn't like it. Couldn't get it to sit like I wanted with the shifter angle and cable, etc. I'll revisit that when I get back from my business trip.

I could not agree more. Dahon's bikes are full of proprietary parts and they refuse to release spare parts even to their dealers.

I can get spare parts for my vacuum cleaner, car, computer, bike friday, and lawn mower, but not for my son's Dahon.

Thier fancy schmancy trademarks don't impress me anymore. I see it as a liability.
