I hand-wash with dawn. If it can get oil spills off of birds...

Anyway, rule #1 is once you start washing, don't dry it until the stain is out. Keep re-washing until you get it out. Then dry.

Dawn Dish Detergent, or Simple Green have both worked for me. DallasSoxFan is right about the "once you start" part in my experience also.

When I commuted to work, I used these to prevent that problem:

The first thing to do in treating a stain is always to blot the stain gently with an absorbent towel. Often, particularly with something viscous like grease, a fair amount of it will be resting on the surface and not in the fiber (yet). If you blot first you'll remove that substance, but if you just start rubbing away at it, even with a solvent, you'll make the problem worse.

If the other tactics don't work, try a solvent like a little lighter fluid. Make sure it doesn't attack the base fabric first. Dry cleaning works wonders but is expensive.

Same way you fix rips at the knees: cut-off shorts.

Huh? Wash it off? It is a status symbol.
I am cool, right?

Put the same chain mark on the other leg.
Very avant-garde. What a statement you'll make at the office...... :)

Lots of methods out there. WD40 soak then Dawn, naphtha solvent (used in dry cleaning and fuel injector cleaning/octane boosters), gasoline (if you are brave), Dryel (home dry cleaning kit sold everywhere), etc etc.

Use mechanics hand cleaner without pumice. Works like a charm....if it doesn't come out then it's what we call scissor soluble........

I prefer these (http://sc.seattlebikesupply.com/SuperContainer/RawData/SKU/128301?width=340&height=340), as I rarely ride with long pants.
Lighter and less expensive.

I've used this on my white cycling socks. It works.
