What, in your opinion, is the best period of classical music? Also, does anyone know of a good, contemporary classical composer as an example of the period?

Baroque.
A contemporary? not that I know of.

My preference is the late Romantic period (Beethoven, Mahler) with huge orchestras and using vocalists as another type of instrument. My tastes are quite varied. I even like atonal music. I will go from classical music, to opera, to Alice in Chains (often in one sitting!)

The Punk Claissical scene rocked. The Sex Swords, fronted by Ludwig VB were way ahead of their time.

I'm trying to write a research paper, thank you very much, about the opinions of internet forums members and their ideas of music. I wanted to include you, but OH NO, not now. :P

I'm listening to Locatelli right now. His music is very bright and airy which, I believe, would place him in the early Classical period, not the Baroque style even though he composed most of his music between 1730 and 1750.

I don't think I've listened to much contemporary classical and am just curious how it sounds.

Thanks. My knowledge of classical music starts and ends with the small collection of records I collect when my grandfather died. But I do love it, I should get around to filling up the ipod like i've been thinking about doing for weeks.

Best Classical music ? The question requires thousands of words to answer and about as many posts here at Bike Forums.
I don't understand your saying contemporary classical composer...period but a good idea would be to listen to Billy Joel's work in that realm, he's been at it for years. Not his POP, his classical compostions. Locatelli's a good one so you've a good start.

Interesting.

I never would have guessed that he had composed some classical pieces.

contemporary classical seems vaguely oxymoronic but Steve Reich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egwXKQDYcvc)might fit in

Ehh...just a quibble--Beethoven wasn't late Romantic, he was on the cusp of the Classical and Romantic periods.

/Music History Minor :p

For contemporary classical music, look towards the Japanese anime/film/game composers. I'm talking about the folks like Uematsu Nobuo and Joe Hisaishi. They are absolutely brilliant.

I have some Phillp Glass. When I was a kid, watching Koyanisquasti (I think I spelled it right) with a bag of weed, or some other mind altering substance, was a night!:thumb:

That movie was sooooo trippy. But I fell asleep through half of it.

I like Glass's operas and film scores. His other stuff though...I am mostly unmoved. IMO, it's boring without a visual spectacle to go along with it.

Sadly, I never learned much about the periods of music. I played a quartet piece by Shostakovich, is he considered contemporary? Does anyone listen to orchestral/string instruments anymore, thats not a music major/minor?

Try some Michael Torke. he's an american composer with synesthesia (sees colors when he hears certain notes) in fact he's written a few tunes based on this phenomonon, "Bright Blue Music", "Green", etc.

I also like John Adams. his "road Movies" disc is very accessible. his "Transmigration of Souls", based on 9/11 is incredibly moving.

I also love Alan Hovhaness Mysterious mountain and Mount St Helens Symphonies...

Jennifer Higdon's Blue Cathedral...

can't go wrong with Gorecki's "Symphony of Sorrowful songs".

Evelyn Glennie has written some interesting stuff. she's a percussionist who's deaf (no, really).

This one makes my heart flutter...
It`s the transition from late Romantic music to twentieth century modernist music.
Listen to Claude Debussy "Clair de lune" from Suite Bergamesque.
Hope you like the pics too...

dude, the fact that you even know there's a difference between classical and romantic puts you way ahead of most.

I am not sure.

I really like Bach, so I always assumed Baroque, but it could just be the specific composer.

I really enjoy the Brandenburg Concertos along with other Bach works.

I actually prefer Mach, a mix of Mozart and Bach. It's in D-Minor, the saddest of all keys I think.

Two words:

ok - much more seriously, Tomita performed some very interesting variations on some Classical compositions. His album with his version of Holst's The Planets, is triumphal.

I have some Tomita - where he takes on Gershwin.

For "contemporary classical", not sure he fits but I have always been a fan of Aaron Copland.

Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Springtime, Rodeo, and more.

I enjoy Copland. I also enjoy Tomita's interpretations.

I think that among the modern "Classical" composers would be people like John Williams, and others that compose for the movies.
