General Cycling Discussion - Yakima MoJoe Rack.. Is this happening to u 2?

ok, i bought a yakima mojoe rack from rei a couple months back. when i started transporting the bike.. i noticed that after a couple times later.. my rear trunk seems to be kinda lifted up because of that rack. i have a 2000 civic and it seem the top two hook that hooks onto the top truck is lifting the metal up slowly and slowly. i think i installed it right.. so what's it doing that? is that happening to you too?

See if you can find some car model specific instructions from Yakima for your car. There may be a specific place that those upper straps have to connect to.

retro... i've called REI and asked them for a specific manual, but there was none. they checked to make sure that that model was for my car, which it was as well. i even went there and see if they can install it for me, which they did... and after that... it's still do the same thing. :( the manual that came with it is pretty universal... so, it's pretty much the same.

i wonder if they will let me exchange it for a hitchmount instead?

I'd bypass REI and call Yakima tech support directly. I'm not familiar with that particular rack, but I can tell you that Thule and Saris both have pages of car model spacific installation instructions. There may not be any, but I'd sure check for myself before I let it damage my car.

thanks retro.. i'm going to give them a call on monday. i tried calling them this morning.. but no answer.

I have the Mo Joe, but I wasn't happy with the way it mounted on my Corolla when I followed the directions. The front hooks did place a lot of stress on the sheet metal of the trunk and it didn't feel stable. In the end, I placed it differently and I think it worked better aside from me having to put a sock on the inside pedal since it was really close to the car and could easily scratch my paint up going over potholes. That was just my experience. The Civic may be different.

I got my rack from REI, as well. It came with a generic illustrated instructions on one sheet, and another with a list of all the cars it fit, followed by a series of number codes that referred to specific instructions for cars with similar fits. These instructions are also available from their website (http://yakima.com/home.html). I found the illustrations on the page for the mo joe, and the specific instructions using the vehicle fit guide.

Finally, the Mo Joe is not recommended for more than 2 bikes on most compact cars.
