All,

What is your favorite way of tracking your work outs over time?
I am in need for something that can track how much I ride, for how long, etc.

many thanks!

I use an application on my iPhone called Cychosis.

It tracks distance, time, cadence, power, elevation, gradient, speed max, heart rate, and body weight.

You have to input everything, but... it is simple to use. Input as much or as little data as you want.

If you do regular routes, you can set them up, then just select the route.
It has room for multiple bikes, if you are infected with buy-kitis
You can also setup and track goals...for example, I am shooting for 3K miles this year. Currently I am at 52% (1560.65 miles). That means that if I ride every day for the rest of the year (without missing a day), I need to average just under 17 miles per day to make my goal.

Nothing fancy.

All I do is record the distance and time from my cycle computer in a spreadsheet. I then calculate the average speed.

I just pop all the data my Cateye Mity 2 into a spreadsheet after every ride, along with some codes for where that ride occurred.

Since I have an iPhone it seems 'interesting' to try an app that records your GPS location along the ride.
any suggestions?

I've not tried it (I still have an old 2G iPhone), but the MotionX GPS app just got a ringing endorsement from The Fredcast. MapMyRide also offers one that interacts with their system, but again I have no GPS, so I can't offer a review, good or bad.

I've been using Cyclistats. Pretty good program.

My experience with MapMyRide (both the the intarwebs and on the iPhone), has been less than spectacular. The interface is clunky, and crashed my phone HARD every time I tried to use it (have installed it three times).

I used to just use a spreadsheet. Enter data from my cycle computer every time I ride. Then I used the charting feature to create a graph that shows me how my average speed, max speed, and distance changes over time.

Now I use SportTracks and a Garmin Edge 305. All the data is uploaded to SportTracks and it will create graphs. I can also enter my weight, blood pressure, etc. into SportTracks. It will allow rides to be entered manually to, for those who do not own Garmin products. Also supports multiple bikes and tracks total mileage on each bike. Probably does other things I don't know about yet. Great piece of shareware.

I keep track of all my rides on www.bikejournal.com. The free version allows you to record about 6 pieces of data I believe. I just record date, total distance, time, avg speed, type of ride (flat road, hilly road, mtb, ect) and the bike that I was on.

I also have a GPS data logger that I take on all my rides as well, however to date I haven't done much with that data, I just have a folder full of GPS data files that I may or may not use some day. I've just started using MapMyRide to look at the elevation profiles of my rides, that's about all I've used it for though. I will say that I do like how their elevation graphs show the % grade as well as the total ascent for the ride. I'm sure there are plenty of other programs that do this is as well so I'm sure it's not a unique feature, but none the less I find it useful.

I spent the big bucks on a garmin 705 and the maps...
The garmin records everything. I can store the ride data on Garmin Connect...It will generate
graphs, show a map of the ride and generate reports.

I have a mac and use the Ascent application which is sorta like Garmin Connect on
steroids. I suspect it might be the best analysis program available for bike riders.

Try http://www.dailymile.com/ you can track cycling, running, walking and others. Just enter the info from your computer (distance and time) and it will do the rest. It generates charts and stats.

I use both http://www.fitnessjournal.com and http://www.bikejournal.com. Fitness Journal requires a nominal annual fee. Bike journal is free for the non premium stuff which I don't need.

I use the Garmin Edge 305. I've had it for a few years now and has proved very reliable. I have made it a habit to upload the data after every ride and recharge the device. I load the data into the Garmin Software "Training Center" to have a local copy of my stats and then I upload the data to GarminConnect for the mapping etc.

Garmin just switched over to Garmin Connect recently and I'm not a real fan of its reports. Before Garmin Connect, I used MotionBased and really liked the reports and the detail of the stats.

I have a Garmin Edge 305 and I use SportTracks. I've added some of their plugins and the thing does some pretty awesome stats.

Thanks for the heads-up about Sport Tracks. I just downloaded it and checked it out. Very nice and does everything I want it to do. I will still upload to Garmin connect to have an online record as well.

Like a certain segment of the bike population, I started out going for the application that did the analysis for me. Always found some results useful with others lacking. Now I'm very much of the DIY type, I collect and store data in a fashion where I can get it INTO anything. When I get enough that justifies actual analysis, I roll my own with a highly customizable DB tool I like.

Even so, whatever tool floats your boat is probably the right tool for you, just pointing out a different option!

www.trailguru.com (http://www.trailguru.com)

Take your GPS with you then download into trailguru. Not only will it map your ride with lots of interesting info and statistics about the one ride but it will also generate reports/graphs/charts etc for the cumulative data from all your rides.

I don't. I'm a commuter, and I see no need to track miles, times, or any other aspect of riding. I enjoy riding, I enjoy the benefits in health and automobile savings, and that's enough for me.

I use bikejournaldotcom....sucks since they limited the free users' entries. But I pay the donation anyways as I've used it for 5 or 6 years.

Used to be $10 but inflation!...Now I pay the $20 and use Gina's as a free account. I place the basics in her log and the details in mine. So I'm still actually paying $10....each!:thumb:

I've been using EveryTrail on the iphone. Free and works good for me. I generally have my things set to private. I also take that data and put it into a spread sheet.

I have a feeling once I reach "steady state" with my riding I may not use it as much, but right now I like how it shows my progress since I'm riding further each time I go out still.

Check out the site I am working on, http://ridewithgps.com/

Here is an example of a ride I went on two summers back, recorded with my garmin 305 with HR and Cadence.

http://ridewithgps.com/trips/94

Mouse over the elevation graph to see instantaneous information for any point. Click the checkboxes to the right of the map in order to overlay the different information on the graph. let me know what you all think!

+1 on Garmin 705 and Ascent. Good stuff. Bought a 705 on sale at REI in September and started using Ascent to track my rides. Ascent automatically tracks GPS data, heart rate, cadence, speed, distance, elevation, etc. etc. etc. I was using another program on the Mac that was working pretty well, but I couldn't do 1/2 of what Ascent does. The Garmin is pricey, but worth it in my book.
