Ehh...once every 4 months or so? I just know that when the flames are too low to be usable at all, that's when we replace it.

Charcoal baybeh here, however I would like to upgrade and have both next year. While a special friend of mine purchased a lovely char-broil for me - and some of the instant briqeuts - I upgraded to back to where I used to grill/smoke - and use a couple of the instant to light - and use charcoal and briquets (oh sp) for the remainder - love it.

However, in the winter in a wind, etc - it's pretty awesome to push the button (provided that works, that is usually the first thing to go on a nominally priced butane grill) in the snow and have FLAME ON.

Although I must say my grilling <shines fingernails> does include some very nice schmoking stuffs in the winter> :D

Never. When we redid the back patio, I got a permanent grill that's hooked to the household gas. I use it for everything. I even did the T'giving turkey out there last year.

If I ever buy a house again, I'll go this route. But that won't be for some time.

I ask because we are moving into a smaller house, and the kitchen is easily half the size of the current one. Thinking about getting a gas grill and do a bunch of cooking outdoors, to get me out of the cramped quarters.

You can get portable grills that run on household gas. You'll need a plumber to hook you up, but if you plan on doing tons of grilling, it may be worth the initial investment.

^^This. Sometimes it lasts for almost a year, sometimes it lasts for 4 months. It depends on how often I use the grill.

I'm estimating that we grill about 3 times a week (even in winter). We exchange our tank approximately every 3 months.

Charcoal, or even better, real hardwood limbs. Started with crumpled up newspaper (chimney optional). And the food should be slow cooked for hours over the heat and in the smoke! If you wish, add a little pan of fruit juice to the grill....it will add a little something extra to the smoke flavor, my favorite is apple juice.

Best thing I ever did was plumb my gas grill into the natural gas line to my house. I have never been out of gas for the grill in the last 10 years. Burns a bit cooler, but I am no grill master anyway.

I'll say...a texican who uses gas. They hang people like that in Amarillo, you know.

Gas is big in Texas. My parents live in a golf community on a lake in east Texas. They place has natural gas. Seems a VP of Lonestar Gas moved in and he wanted gas at his lake house. They ran a pipeline to StarHarbor for him, or so the legend goes.

Charcoal adds a nice flavor, but is sure is nice to turn on the grill, light it and go get a beer while the grill heats up.

Do you have a smoke box where you can put some hardwood chips in it and they burn slowly and give you a nice smoke flavor? I have a gas grill too, although I much prefer charcoal for flavor. A small box on the side can hold a handful of hardwood chips and improves the flavor dramatically.

We use an electric starter underneath the charcoal bed. Once the flames are going, pull it out and set it aside to cool. Works great except when the 'Cane has been through. But that's why they invented generators.

I almost disowned my father when he converted to gas. :(

I have an offset smoker and a gas grill... they both have their uses... if I want some more flavor I just add some wood chunks to the grill.... but there's nothing like the flavor of the smoker. :love:

though I won't comment on the equation proposed. I do only grill w/ charcoal, but if I did it more freq'ly, I'm not certain I'd remain a purist. My wife grew up in SoCal w/ nightly grilling, definitely prefers the briquets - maybe it's the ritual of it.

AllenG - and I just knew a guy that sings a Lotus XIs praises knows that gas' preferred use is combustion, esp. in fire pump engines.
