Biscuits are best for joining planks (table tops etc) mostly because they have some tolerance for error, but dowels still rule for smaller jobs.

I'd argue that some simple joinery rules over dowels. It just depends on your skill level and knowledge.

He has a woodie

I like M&T joints but dowels can be quick and easy. The rockler plans I used to make cribs for both my kids used dowels for the main frame and M&T for the slats.

^^^ Yep, and, (to my experienced eyes) crappy ones at that.

The wood appears to be pine. For softwoods you want WIDE tails and medium pins. For hardwoods medium pins & tails are fine as are medium pins and narrow tails.

Also, those DT's were made on a machine. Handcut DT's are better because they show the craftsmanship and skills of the maker.

These days, if I see furniture constructed any way other than just random nails, I'm amazed. Even basic dovetails, dados, and such are a lost art it seems, as people tend to prefer buying some paperboard stuff from X-Mart and replace it every couple years when it gets wet or breaks.

This is because it is cheaper to buy and replace. Plus you get a whole new house of furniture every few years in the bargain. Today no one plans for the future for either themselves or their kids. It is ALL about ME, ME, ME and how soon can I get the gratification.
