Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

CANCELLED!

Three weeks ago I was on my club ride and I saw something I thought I'd never see in SoCal - 4 guys on high end bikes, full kits, shaven legs and NO HELMETS. I've been thinking of doing my "helmets optional" ride for a while and when I saw these guys it was like the pope telling me "Dude, you ain't alone - go for it!". So I'm going for it!

When: Sunday, October 4 at 9:00 AM.

Where: The Quail Hill shopping center in Irvine on the corner of Quail Hill Pkwy and Shady Canyon Dr. Albertson's, Starbucks etc located there. Here is the street address of the Albertson's in that shopping center.
6601 Quail Hill Parkway
Irvine, CA 92603

The route: I'll take the bike path from Quail Hill to University Rd. Left on University, cross Jamboree, Right on Back Bay to PCH, Left (South) on PCH to the Starbucks on PCH and Goldenrod in Corona del Mar. Stop there for coffee. From there - continue South on PCH, Left on Newport Coast, Right on Turtle Ridge, Right on Bonita Canyon, Right on Shady Canyon, enter the Shady Canyon bike path on the left and back to the start. Approx. 25 miles total with about 1000 feet of climbing.

The pace: Leisurely 15-20 mph.

Anybody wants to join me? I mean - join me like a riding buddy. I'm not an organizer or responsible person in any way. Also I'm not a coach, nor a doctor. Participate at own risk and be self-sufficient. Helmet "nazis" welcome. :D Let's see if we can buddy up instead of throwing manure at each other.

Almost forgot!
Dress code: Well, obviously the aforementioned helmet is optional, which means that you are free to chose if you want to wear one or not. One suggestion (also optional) - if you are not wearing a helmet, wear a pro-team jersey for additional posing points. :thumb:

Best of luck!

Quick story: I was riding along the Santa Ana riverbed (2004), pushing hard and enjoying the ride. The next thing I know I woke to realize that I was in the emergency room at HOAG hospital. My wife said that I kept asking her the same question over and over, not realizing she had answered me as many times. She told me I had an accident and that I landed a full impact on my helmet.

I later examined my helmet and found the rear completely crushed in, in what would have been the occipital region of my skull.

Not judging, just informing.

Thankful to be here today.

I've shattered a few helmets (bicycle & motorcycle) into white styrofoam chunks, but I salute your right to go au naturel. When I used to ride to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, SD, I was always the only one riding around with a bright-white fullfaced helmet and bright-orange vest, which always made it really easy for my friends to find me. :D

Wish I could join you, but the Tour de Poway's on, 10/4 good buddy. Have fun and be safe(ish)!

Hey guys, this is just a ride. If you prefer riding with helmet, that's fine by me. If you want to share your stories, you can do that on the "Safety" forum. :D
Nice picture, Chris. :D Have fun in Poway. It's a cool ride, I've done it 6 years in a row.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm notorious for 2 things. The first you already know (the No Helmet part). The second is that if it rains or it looks like rain, I don't ride at all. I just saw that there is a chance of rain on Sunday. If the forecast materializes, then I'll be getting some extra sleep.

Well, maybe you're wrong about no helmets being a thing of the future, but I don't know. My timing is almost always off.

From what I've seen, fixie hipsters and Midnight Ridazz are actually embracing helmet use.

Maybe you are ahead of the curve...too ahead of the curve...:)

Thanks jabantik00! He's from "noho", he wouldn't know. ;)

That's very flattering Alice, but I don't think I'm ahead of the curve. When it comes to "safety", I'm stuck back in the 70s and 80s when people even played ice hockey without helmets. I've got nothing against cycling helmets and people that use them, I just don't want to be lectured what to put on my own skull when riding a bike.

That's too bad, a challenging idea :twitchy:. Happily :innocent:the cycling helmet is not enforced by law. Not sure though that Ben had cycling helmets in mind though when he spoke those words you quote or would have argued a slippery slope from helmets.

Hey I hear hints of a Palomar climb the 18th :thumb:, how are the legs?
