Commuting - A Nip in the Air Today

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Today was the first day I wore my leather gloves and a hat. Yeah, I skipped the past two rainy days. Anyhow, it felt nice. My rosy cheeks are back, I made a couple impressive snot rockets (yeah, it's allergy season, too), and I had the MUP to myself. The walnuts are dropping, amongst other items, so I'm on the look out. But it was a beautiful sunrise.
I'm looking forward to the leaves changing in the next few weeks.:thumb:
Yep, chilly here as well. The first day I could see my breath when I walked out the door.

Cool here in DC... 47 when I left in the AM. Still in shorts and short-sleeves for the commute (just threw on a second tee shirt). Was a little chilly for the first mile or two, but by the end of my commute, I was very comfortable. Love the cooler fall weather and looking forward to my first full winter of commuting in a few months (well as wintry as one might consider DC...)
First day of studded-tires-season for me today, the ground was completely white this morning and the roads were icy.

Yah, it was cooler than usual in Tucson too. I was a little chilly in my sleeveless jersey for the first couple miles.
Still sweaty by the time I got to work though...

Same here, I need to get some ear protection, this morning I just put a scarf around my head. I looked like an old Turkish peasant-woman.

Widespread frost here, the thermometer on the house read 32*F, on my bike it was at about 25*F.
I actually wore my jacket and lined pants this morning.
Supposed to be 65*F this afternoon, but it's already 1:15 and it's only 55.

Definitely chilly here too at 62F. You can see this was quite a drop from the previous morning at 80F.

Third day of mid-40s mornings in North Alabama. I've added a sweatshirt to my shorts and tee. It's still mid-70s for the ride home so the sweatshirt has to come off.
I'm not a fan of cold weather so I'll be switching to cycling-specific, cold weather gear soon.

Notably nippy here in Boston; I wore an extra layer the first time since about our chillly May. Had a headwind and felt sluggish, but I'm not worried; I rode a self-satisfying century last Saturday. Unfortunately, my training effect will dissipate with the oncoming cold weather. :(

Today was my first long-sleeve commuting day this year. The chill felt quite nice, actually.
Chilly in UT as well. 30 - 35 this morning + windchill. Good morning. Lots better than sitting in a car.

Chilly in Sunnyvale CA as well, around 51 this morning. I thought I can get away with it with light gloves, leg warmers and a light wind jacket. By the time I got to work my feet and hands were numb from the cold. Windchill factor "blows".
45 this am in Indy. Long sleeve shirt with nylon vest. Relaxed fit tights.
Doesn't feel nippy to me until we get down into the 30's.

It does feel like fall, but also feels nice. I just ride a little harder to help break the morning chill.
I'm starting to get those you rode today looks again!

The best are, "You didn't ride in today, did you?".

nice and cool.
but the drivers were nuts. I got more buzzes and right hooks then ever. I thought people drive crazily in the *summer!* :p It was the first day that I broke out my new thrift shop bright green wool sweater. It must have been like a red cape to a bull. Even a cop ran me out of a left turn lane at a red light!
But whatever. I enjoyed the ride despite it all. One nice deep breath of that air canceled out any of that!
It got hot again in L.A. today.. weather widget says 94°
It must have been like a red cape to a bull.
It might just be my imagination, but it seems like when I wear my red shirt, the drivers are less aggressive.
It was almost 50 degrees this morning when I went on my 'get out of the house or die' ride.
Yesterday I bought a set of knee warmers, after about a mile I found that they really ought
to be called lower thigh warmers, I had to stop and pull'em up well over the knee...
I also wore a light wind breaker.
When I returned home after 20 miles I was 'drippy'...

What is this "nip" of which you speak. It was in the 90s here in South Texas today. Strong southerly wind to boot. Send some of that weather down here!
It was the first truly chilly day of the season here this morning too. The official temp was 49F when I left the house this morning but with a brutal 30mph wind that made it feel closer to 30. Wasn't dressed for it but felt pretty good by about the second mile though. Almost 6pm now and about to leave the office and it's a very nice 63 outside with a much more pleasant 7mph breeze.
It was high 40's on my way into work and high 30's on my way home. The temprature over the last week jumped from highs in the lower 70's to highs in the mid 50's. It's okay, I still have my winter gear from last winter. Though I did just buy two Merino wool blend long sleeves.
no motor?

I didn't ride today, but I did yesterday and wore the leg part of my convertible pants and my vest for the first time since spring. Felt weird, but good.

Chilly for me in NYC. First day of knee warmers both ways as well first day of vest over jersey in any direction.
40 degree mornings are creeping in here in Boston... It was freezing this morning! Still quite a few people biking though.

I noticed that too.
I'm amazed that it's the first cold morning for so many in the US as it was here in the UK today. 41F 5C here at 05:15 this morning, being the first day I could see my breath in the air.
Looking forward to the cooler days. I'm going to try and ride into work wearing shorts until the second week of November this year, managed first week last year.

Why wear shorts so late in the year?
I sense some take pride in wearing shorts and tees in cold weather and I've never understood that.:o I'm pretty basic--I look for comfort. I like it chilly, too, and don't wear a hat nowadays until it's below 50, but that's because I'm more comfortable that way. Are you comfortable in shorts when it's this cold? Where's the pride come from?
I sat in the stands last Friday night at our high school football game (the oblong type :)), and it got a bit chilly. I biked there, as did my wife, and she told me at halftime to put on my sweater, since everyone else was wearing long sleeves. I realized I was a bit chilly, and wore the wool. Sounds like some of you take it as a matter of pride to not do that. Why??? What am I missing???:twitchy:

ecrider,
I'll gladly send you cold air if you'll send that warm air up here to NW Montana. Summer has definitely ended, we're going down into the low-to-mid 30s at night and our day time highs are in the 50s (the wind chill makes it feel colder). I'm not ready for winter--never am. If I could only find a November-March gig in the southern hemisphere I'd gladly avoid winter all together.

See this post on a current thread, "I'm always cold. Help me get dressed! (Winter commuting clothes)"
At the same time, watch out for the people who seem to treat riding in the cold as a test of their manhood.
Meaning the "I wear shorts until it hits 20F." type people...
A 36 degree slide. Yikes 90 to 54f.
