Cyclocross - can I use my moto outcast 29er?

i want to try cyclocross but I cant afford a new bike and 2 of my 26" geared mtbs have discs. im pretty sure wide tires won't fit my road bike so im left with my single speed outcast 29er. can I use this or will I probably die? Im only 14 i have to cut grass around the neighboor hood to buy stuff so I cant get enough before the season is over. also i have a 33 in front and a 20 rear. this would be an ideal gear right?

If you can't ride a CX bike, a rigid 29er is the next best option, IMO. 33-20 might be a little low though, maybe look for a 42t chainring or a 16t cog. Also, your geared 26" bikes are fine. No one cares about your disc brakes until you get to UCI level. Just remove any bar ends you may have.

its not that I dont believe you but i was told by 2 people in the same league that I couldnt have discs. I will try to confrim this but I do have a 42t and I cant make it around an xc trail with it. I still dont know but cyclocross isnt flat at all is it?

Rules vary from place to place. Around here, you could use disc brakes.

Courses also vary, but they're generally mostly flat. You may have trouble with some hills, but with the 33-20 you'd be spinning out all over the place. You could buy a couple of smaller cogs (16T and 17T or 18T) and get to the race early enough to change it once you see the course. You can get Formula cogs for $11 shipped from thebikesmiths.com.

When I raced SS, I put 2 masterlinks in my chain such that I could easily shorten it by removing the necessary links after the cog change.

Bottom line, get out there and race. It's a lot of fun, regardless of what you do it with.

i forgot my dad has an old schwinn high plains. its not discs and with a minor derailleur adjustment I can get all the gears to work so i thing i will do it with that.
