I'm currently building a bike (BMX freestyle) and I just came to the hubs. Should I use berrings in a brace, ring, ect. or just open? Is there any difference? Comments would help.
Thanks

Doesn't seem to matter if you use a retainer or not. What's important is that the balls be exactly the right size and that you don't try to crowd in one extra. Otherwise you'll change the "over locknut dimension" of your hub. When it looks like just one more ball will fit, you've got the right number.

Going without the retainer may allow you to fit an extra bearing in there. Rather than 6 bearings taking the load it may be 7.
Retainers faciltate assembly in the factories.
