Well, we turned on the furnace for the first time this fall :( We usually try to hold out till the middle of October, but we're heading down to the freezing point tonight. Anyone else give in?

I just cranked it up a bit tonight @ dinnertime. It's going down to the high 30's here tonight. But it will warm up after that.

It's a bit chilly here, I use a flannel blanket under my feather duvet for extra warmth.

it's only a hot 60F here right now, but should get down to the low 50s by morning. i'm holding out to teh low 40s and most likely will turn the heat on when it dips below 40F.

I'm currently at 39F. Have no fishies like last winter, just two cats and all my pipes are enclosed between the other townhouses in the 9 townhouse "row" we have here and plus I have in my own basement - both water heaters and furnaces for two townhouses (including my own) underneath me - needless to say, my basement is rather warm.
Not turning on heat till I have too - and so far I'm good. Going to get down to 43F tonite - we've been in a cold, wet rainy snap here this past week.
I personally like the cold, it's just visitors that have to adjust the temp for ...
And after living in old roommate's house for a week with no heat in January when it went to sub-zero - and the house went from 42F to 35F after five days (and yes I and my cats and roommates cats lived under the comforter(s) with flashlights and books and candles) - not to mention that used to camp in the winter - I have no problems with this.

However - when I receive guests, heat goes on. :D

I don't turn the heat on and off, nor the air conditioning, either. The automatic thermostats do it all by themselves!

Just make sure your brass monkey is wrapped in an electric blanket, plugged in, and the power switch on. You'll be OK.

It's getting kind of chilly up this way in Northern New England...I've had the furnace turned on the past few nights.

See everyone thinks that "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" is a dirty phrase,
The phrase has nothing to do with a monkey the animal. Actually the monkey was the tray on an old warship that held a stack of cannon balls. During cold weather the cannonballs would contract and fall off the "monkey". Hence the phrase "it's cold enough to freeze the balls off of a brass monkey".
A lot of common phrases come from sailing.

It's going down to 5 degrees Celcius (41 deg's F). We've turned off the furnace again until we get closer to freezing overnight. In the meantime, we've got a thick down duvet, 2 adults and 2 jack russells under the covers trying to stay warm :D

We've already had a couple sub-20F nights...and a huge stack of free firewood. We've been burning to keep the furnace from kicking on. Since we've been sick with colds, it helped a lot.

Furnace has been on a fair bit lately and we could get snow tonight... our first frost was last Thursday.

It's rather "balmy" here tonight actually - probably top off at the mid 40's but ...
Not turning heat on ... seeing how I actually lasted last January during the first Winter cold spell - with no power (roommate didn't pay bill, his house) and he lived elsewhere for a week, while I endured - 5 days of no electric/heat for 5 days - with the house ending up at 35F (towards the end I had the water running in the faucets) ... had all the cats in the house (5 at the time) living under my blankets, charged the roommate for all the batteries I ate for flashlights and other candles I had lit so I could at least read. At first it was an almost fun thing (weekend) so it was no problem, however getting up for work when you would poke your head out of the "cocoon" shelter made for sleeping and seeing your breath - totally NON-priceless.
I can last out till very cold here in my own place. Have in my basement both my water heater and furnace and the upstairs tenant heater and furnace as well - a plus for me! (I have a warm basement) plus my pipes are protected by the adjoining townhouses, no exposed pipes to the outside at all - so I'm good till I feel actually cold. :D And I actually prefer a cooler house anyways - probably due to the fact that I'm outside so much and prefer open air and cooler temps anyway.
So GAME ON! Not turning on heat unless I really have top (like if I have a visitor or something) - focusing on Thanksgiving time or later. :D Like I said - Game on!

Been dropping a few degrees each day. Still kinda hot but the weather is better than usual. Not gonna lie the nights are kinda chilly.
