Hi all,

I'm considering a recumbent for long-distance riding. Will I still be able to pull the trailer I recently got for my 2 year old son?

The bent I'm considering is the Velotechnik Street Machine (short wheelbase, underseat steering).

The trailer connects to my current bike at the rear axle. Is it compatible with a 'bent?

Thanks for your opinions.

As far as I can see, it should work fine. But the people to ask are the folks at the LBS you're buying the new bike from. If they're accustomed to handling bents, they'll be used to issues like this one.

As long as the hitch will fit the bike it will work, I tow trailers behind my bents often and never have a problem with it.

It's doable but SWB suspended bikes like that will find the trailer inducing more pogoing and oscillations than other bents.

I tow a trailer behind a clwb rear suspended bent without serious problem, although I have a stiff suspension and my wheelbase is a foot longer than the Streetmachine. Hills are a problem with that extra towing weight.

The Street Machine is a great machine for what likely is the non-towing majority of your time.

A Burley trailer can be ordered with a universal hitch that should just replace the skewer in the back wheel. Very simple.

Hi all,

Thanks for your helpful responses. I'm getting the Street Machine in September. My wife accepted the expense IF I agreed to sell the motorcycle that's sitting in the garage at the moment.

Well, It wasn't getting much use anyway.

If you'e dying to get the bicycle of your dreams but your better half objects, here's an example of negotiation to consider.
