I've long since stopped being an even somewhat regular poster at BF, though I was still riding my bike a fair amount. Last spring and into the summer I had some of the best on-the-bike form I've had in my life. But with family commitments, the need to work on some projects I will need if I hope to get tenure, etc., I didn't make it to any races (other than a triathlon), which had been my goal. I also began running a great deal more as it was easier to fit in than bike rides.

Then school started, including the necessity for me to assist in getting my son to kindergarten. This necessity means that I do not commute by bike nearly as much as I used to. Still, I was getting the rides in and holding on to the hope that I would still make a race this fall or, at the very least be ready for the spring.

But in subsequent weeks, I've been running more and more (easier to fit in) and riding less. Today was the first day this week I worked a ride in -- rode my bike to work (~11 miles, and will ride home), but was looking forward to my 8X400 workout at the track the whole way. And this week, my running total will exceed my biking total for the first time in, well, since I started riding somewhat seriously about 12 years ago. I guess it makes sense -- I've done better in my age group in 5ks than I ever did racing my bike.

Sounds very similar to how my training hours got mopped up this season... but I'm not running.

You're enjoying the running more anyway, so have at it. Bike racing will always be there.

It is amazing the little things that soak up time. Forgot to mention the new commitment to T-Ball. Which is awesome. Much better use of my time than either running or riding. Running while the kids ride is also good.

But I will get back to more time on the bike at some point. Especially if I can finish this damn book and get tenure.

Sounds like you just needed a change of pace too, and running is a little different. Give yourself time to get your schedule back to normal and maybe you'll be able to ride some more.

I ran for years and never rode, then in May I started riding and got totally hooked. Didn't really care if I got to run as was having more fun on the bike. Blew out my back about a month ago and hope to be back to being able to walk and ride in a few weeks, so I'm going buggy not being able to do anything.

Don't beat yourself up because your interests have drifted a bit, do both when you can.

They haven't -- never bought spokes.

not to worry - I ran much more (distance and time) than I rode these last 9 months...

I'm mostly back to riding now... but I still run.
everything in its season.
