After 140k miles of driving, I have finally broken down and bought this:

https://www.bumperart.com/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=2004051006&productID=2799

Anyone know if they work? I like the forceful message it sends.

I don't know anything about you, but to me it says "Jerk on Board"

If the law of the land, and the potential fines doesn't work, why would a bumper sticker?

I would at least get the one with Yosemite Sam so it would be funny...

Nobody tailgates when I am cycling. So people must do it thinking it will make me speed up. This sticker should get the message across I will not speed up so they should overtake me .

It'll probably make people drive closer to you to read the sticker.

It'll probably make people drive closer to you to read the sticker.

I solved that problem by ordering their largest size sticker.

If someone is tailgating me, I'll just take my foot off the accelerator. They're in such a hurry, they might like going 40 in a 55...

just weld a 20ft pole to your car and aim it out the trunk.
don't forget to tie a red cloth to the tip.

if they rear end you, their heads get poked out.
like in that movie, final destination 2.

I find a gentle double flash of the brake lights works a majority of the time. If it doesn't after the second try, I gradually slow down by about 10 mph and speed back up so they'll get the message.

If they still don't get the message, then they've forfeited their right to not have me mess with their head, and I most definitely will do so at that point.

But you have to be willing to pay really close attention if you're going to screw with someone. There's some downright dangerous *holes out there. As much fun as it would be to ruin their day being social deviants, you gotta know when to get out of the way before they hurt someone.

This approach sounds a little provocative in my opinion. The bumper sticker send the message loud and clear. If someone still wants to ignore that, then messing with them will just 'escalate' the problem.

Yeah, I'll admit it's provocative. I honestly don't recommend it. But at the same time, it bothers me to let someone go about their merry life being rude to and even recklessly endangering others. I take it far enough to make sure they know why it's happening, and then give a smile and a wave when I finally decide to let them pass.

Some of these folks puzzle me. Yesterday I was out in the mountains. A lady in a BMW came up behind me in a passing zone and for unknown reasons didn't take the opportunity. But as soon as it reverted to one lane each way, she pulled up tight on my back even though I was going 5 over. She figured it out after the slow down and speed back up message.

It was apparently a good day for pricks. I also got honked at and flipped off on a freeway exit ramp, apparently for only going 40 mph down the ramp. Mind you, the freeway traffic was stop and go.

You need a bumper sticker that reads "IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU'RE TOO CLOSE"

Of course, it would take up your whole bumper.

Why do tailgaters bother you? Have you ever been rear-ended? If they hit you it's their fault. I just ignore 'em and get on with driving.

being the victim of a hit and run is no fun either.
you should also pay attention to what's behind you.
last thing you want is to be rear ended by an 18 wheeler.

Well if you actually drove fast enough you would not need the bumper sticker. Slow drivers suck.

Kind of got the same impression. I' rather see it light on at the press of a button. And maybe shoot a couple of rockets. That should get the attention of any offending tailgater. :)

Rig up a windshield washer to shoot off the back of your car toward theirs; fill the reservoir with whatever you like -- vinegar, deer scent, etc. It'll wet the windshield, and they'll get the smell through the vents.

As the driver of a tiny, low-to-the-ground car, every time I drive at night I feel the need to modify my car thusly:

High-powered floodlights, aimed backwards, mounted on the trunklid at approximately jackassmobile windshield height.

Flip of the switch away from Blinding High Beam Equalization.

stay out of the passing lane unless you're passing someone.
problem solved.
unless it's a 2 lane road. then the real badasses won't bother tailgating, they will just pass you. only the nancy drivers tailgate until they get to a passing zone. not much you can do about that. : /
it is pretty fun to go slower than the speed limit and then accelerate when they try to pass you in a no passing zone, though. people don't expect miatas to be that quick... :D

This is impossible unless.....

a: You never use your rear view mirrors.

b: you just started driving yesterday.

c: your exhaust smells really, really bad.

d: you only drive in reverse.

e: you spit alot of tobacco juice.

f: you drive on the wrong side.

g: your car has a deafening boom box.

+1

+ 1 additional recommendation:

If you are in the passing lane, PASS already and get out of the passing lane. Cruising along at a steady 2 mph faster than the right lane isn't exactly passing. PA turnpike drivers in central PA, you know who you are.

I just wash my windshield. there is enough spray that they turn on their windshield wipers. usually the second shot backs them off. of course, if its raining/snowing out I'm sol with this approach.

I wouldn't expect any bumper sticker to reduce tailgaters.

Tailgaters are only likely to hit you if you brake hard or unexpectedly. Keep a huge gap in front of you at all times while being %100 vigilant of other traffic and hazards and this won't happen. Driving at or below the speed limit makes this much easier to do. Tailgaters don't just drive up and hit a vehicle that's traveling at a steady rate.

I find that NOT exceeding the speed limit also actually reduces tailgating. Drivers either go around or back off on their own. The worst thing to do is brake check 'em, followed by speeding up. (they will speed up too, and then you have a high speed tailgater) You want to prevent being rear ended, not do things that will make it more likely!

Wordbiker
10-03-09, 10:41 PM
I'm an "at the speed limit" driver.

When I get a tailgater wishing to exceed the limit, I'll keep my right foot on the accellerator and with my left foot depress the brake pedal just enough to make the lights come on, not enough to slow me down. It works almost all of the time.

For x136: My Dad had his truck modified with a high-powered offroad light facing backwards on a momentary switch for just those occasions. He had other fun stuff too, like a second windshield sprayer facing the front of the truck. It was great fun to pull up to folks standing in a parking space and scatter them with a few squirts. Even folks that knew him forgot about it on occasion and walked by the front of the truck...then laughed when they were "got".

mlts22
10-04-09, 12:19 AM
What is weird is that tailgating depends on car. If I'm driving my truck, I have only had one person tailgate in the past year, and a quick double-tap of the brakes got them to back off immediately. (There is a difference between tailgating for a while, and just moving in a gap.)

However, a family member's Honda, which I drive the same speed in it, it gets tailgated almost every ride. What I do is check the situation, back off a bit, and if the person continues, give a quick double-tap of the brakes, and if that doesn't do anything, continue driving. There are a lot of mental cases here in Texas, and the last thing I am going to do is deliberately "pulse and glide" or even worse a brake check to aggravate the situation.

Only if there's someone tailgating me, or a police car around. I usually keep up with traffic otherwise. I may drive 10 to 20 k faster, depending on what car I'm in, but really, fuel mileage really drops off over 95 km/hr anyways. Also I consider driving a privilege, not a right. Don't worry, I avoid the US as much as possible! Your speed limits are lower, anyways. :p
