my dad gave me his full rigid schwinn highplains and the centis are horrible and I was wondering if I could put linear brakes on the centi mounts.

Yes.

On the brake bosses/studs.

Linear or 'V' brakes to replace cantilever brakes.

'Cantis'.

'Cantis'.

The problem with cantis is normally one of adjustment: people adjust them so that they feel a nice hard sensation when the squeeze the lever. Unfortunately this guarantees they're not working - properly adjusted cantis feel squashy. The squashing comes from leverage that is so high it squashes the pads against the rims. V-brakes aren't as adjustable, so they don't end up messed up like that. Google "cantilever brake adjustment" and you'll get lots of help.

Linear pull cantilvers and center pull cantilevers use the same 8mm stud. You'll need new brake levers too -- hope the current ones don't have integrated shifters on them -- otherwise you'll need new shifters too.
