Look for a great little paperback book, "Save Your Knees," by James Fox, M.D. The author was the official orthopedic surgeon for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, and his practice was devoted to knees. The back of the book has some appropriate strengthening and limbering exercises.

In the meantime, make sure you saddle is not too low, and gear down, i.e., be a spinner, not a masher. I like the seated knee extension machine at my local YMCA, but I work each knee separately and only through the last 15 degrees to full extension, to build the vastus medialus preferentially. (Of the four muscles in the quad group, the medialus is the only one which constrains the kneecap from rotating outward from its proper alignment. A mistracking kneecap can cause all sorts of pain and disability.)

I have dislocated my left kneecap, twice fully and once partially. Fortunately, a month shy of my 54th birthday, I am still able to jog (4 mlies per workday) and cycle. I credit my rehabilitation and maintenance exercise routine and a few nutritoinal supplements, including glucosamine and condroitin.

I'm having the same problem. Thought it was my cleat so I adjusted that today. The outer left part of the knee has a slight dull ache. The other knee is OK! Is that still a saddle problem?
