Foo - Weird sense of humor, nut job, or needs ass kicked?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just got a message from someone I haven't heard from since HS. Nothing particularly unusual about that, except the only line in the communication was
What happend to the terrorist thing you did your freshman year at U of I?
:wtf: I did go to U of I, and I was an activist at the time. However, I've never been involved with any outfit that advocated or personally got involved in violence. Anyone that knows much about me knows that I hate weapons of all sorts. BTW, I did not keep contact with this ******* after I left HS and he did not go to U of I (or if he did, I certainly didn't know about it), so he'd have no way of knowing what I did there.
Normally, I'd just shrug it off but people don't have much sense of humor about this kind of stuff nowadays. I don't intend to respond in any way aside from pitching the message, but I don't know how to interpret this at all.

I have little doubt it was typed from a van down by the river.
My spidey sense says save the message for legal reasons. If he keeps harassing you, get the police involved.

My thought exactly!....well, not exactly, I was thinking more like Home Land Security than the Police.
Did it come from a .gov email account?

Sadly, this sounds feasible.
When I was in HS, I liked playing with fireworks. They were illegal where I lived. I often had some, and he knew that.
If he works for Homeland Security now, I could see him going on a fishing expedition -- i.e. "banerjek liked firecrackers and bottle rockets in the early 80's. Surely he must be bomb making expert by now...." I remember this guy as an idiot and cannot discount the possibility that this is our gov't dollars at work.

Tracked me down on FB last night...
This like the Operation TIPS thread, or what? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_TIPS)
Whatever the source I'd avoid a reply. And I've had my share of "official" experiences.

So a mail bomb is out of the question then as he could be a fed.
Barring that, ignore him.

You could always put a mask on, go to the library, and email something similar back to him from a public email system like yahoo or Gmail :innocent:

By now, of course, the massive NSA supercomputers that filter the net looking for certain words have spotted your message. Right now in Fort Meade, Maryland, there is a tiny electronic file with your name on it. Save the message. You can refer to it in Gitmo.

1. White guy sends message to other white guy.
2. Other white guy posts a WTF thread on BF.
3. More people pile in to make fun of Islam.

Or me for that matter? I'm most commonly mistaken for being from the Middle East.
But there are many ninnies out there. I used to have a tshirt that said
КГБ (KGB) in huge letters. You wouldn't believe how many people asked if I was a spy -- and they were serious

Print the email and sock it away in case you need it court.
Do not respond. In the meantime Fuhgetaboutit, unless he persists, then do as said above, report him.
He's probably very lonely. Verrry lonely. And nuts.
Insane people like that, there is absolutely no reply you can consider that may help things. I'd save the mail.
I also wonder if it might be the beginnings of a blackmail/extortion attempt. I've heard of similar things happening to people with a funny past, and in this economy, people desperate for money, so they find something they remember an old "friend" did, they try to demand hush money.
Either way, the mail might be useful as evidence. Plus, Facebook has a report feature which may help things too.

It wouldn't work since I've never done anything I'm truly ashamed of (not that I haven't done plenty of stupid things, but that's a different matter). Normally, I'd play with the dude a bit, but security people take jokes about such matters seriously and I don't want to do something that would land me on a no fly list.

I don't know what to call it but when anyone joins social networking sites like FB anything can be expected. You are wide open. People, especially those over the age of 30, are on there to either spy on children or come in contact with those from the past. If you are not interested in him or others that may "pop up," you should get off the site and/or block and report the guy. Like Alfster, I am not on the site. My past is my past.

I think he's trying to be funny, but obviously it fell flat. Put him on your limited profile list, and forget about it.
People often forget that it's really hard to convey tone on the internet, which is what makes BF so entertaining and simultaneously aggravating :)
Sounds like the typical conservative nut job. They watch Fox News and suddenly there is a terrorist under every rock. I get these comments from old friends, they think it's cool to call people names, just like their heroes on Fox News. I don't think they realize how pathetic it makes them look.

weirdo from my HS became a private investigator. As part of their training, they practice using connections to track down old aquaintances and test out the effectiveness of their methods. It is very annoying and invasive. The guy kept harrasing my wife (not from my HS) to get information about my other HS friends. Wouldn't leave her alone until I got on the phone and threatened to call the cops (which would probably be ineffective).
Save the email, but don't respond. Hopefully, he'll just go away.
